Glad you got your blocks in!!….. Yes they are expensive but relatively not so much compared to many other things…. A good bit of material to remove…. Just be safe!!….If necessary maybe some temporary holder jigs or gadgets…,,

That would be my often scared and brused hands and fingers...Crying or Very sad

I just checked the Williams Bros GB that I have coming in 1/32 scale. It does have a clear plastic canopy insert that may be adapted. The frame would have to be fashioned. There are many GB's in that scale on ebay, some rather reasonable some not so.

13.5" is 1/2" scale for the R-2 with the 27' wing. The 2.75" fuselage is more like the 25' span R-1 scaled to 13.5".

This has a nice color scan of the R-1. http://www.eliminatorprops.com/Gee-Bee-R-1-Pics.php?currDir=.&pageType=image&image=gbr1b.jpg&startFrom=1

Nice images.

I got the 1/32" scale GB today, way too small although the decals will work nicely.

More like 1/12" would do it, but none available in that scale. Canopy won't work either. Roberts nicely rendered templates came in at the same time.

Glad you got the templates Bob…. time for some wood chips!!….. Decals may be hard to find to fit close to scale…. The decals on mine are actually too large for scale…. But it’s a bit of a rat rod anyway so no matter….. I’ll probably do a wood canopy on mine and paint it silver….

A little progress…. The Cub starts easy and runs great….. Seems louder than a Cox!!… Just needs some more bench runs….

Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 5c758510

Leveling the two shells so they will mate better…..The wing openings needed some relief, That’s why it had the gap on the left side of the fuse….

Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 E7c45b10

The firewall was a little mushy and wood screw holes were stripped ….So fitting a new one to the lower “pan” and checking thrust line….

Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 82762e10

I made a little cradle to hold the round fuselage…. Easier to get it square with the table that way

I knew you were going to have some fun with that restore Robert. There is nothing in this hobby that I like better than giving an old derelict new life - plastic or balsa.

I have used this old Nicholson four-sided rasp for years to shape balsa. Using your templates it will get those balsa blocks shaped quickly, then rout out the interior.

Absolutely!!…. I had more fun than expected restoring and flying the Firebaby…., Enough that I wanted to try it again.. … Restoring has a different set of challenges compared to scratch building…. Fun to work thru some different kinds of problems…. Satisfying when it works out…..

There’s a Gee Bee in those blocks somewhere Bob Very Happy ….. That nice rasp will make short work on the outside of the block…. Much safer than a knife too!!…. The router sounds good for material removal on the inside..,  Probably can remove a lot quickly…. I found this rough stone in my Dremel box and experimented on a scrap just to see …. It’s not real fast but easy to control and leaves an OK finish….. I’ll use it to thin the inside of the fuse when I get to that point….

I like your cradle, the 90 degree to set the engine, maybe a toothpick under the leading edge to give a little down thrust, the blind nuts in the mount and the rubber band hold downs. I might have to copy that idea when it comes time to gluing up.

The stone looks to be bigger than a Dremel, perhaps for a Harbor Freight tool. I have that set. Might be good for the fine work of routing out the interior by hand.

I should have added metal to that "plastic, balsa" list. I'm eagerly awaiting this beatup Tornado for the DBoy.

Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 Roep_r10

Easy to evaluate. Three non-standard case screws with one different. Probably one or more case threads hogged out. Head screws all buggered up. It might not be so much fun.

Happy that the Cub runs, and runs well. I was a little concerned about that after-market needle, but Ken says it's a great substiute.

Using your templates to best advantage Robert, but I think I could have got by with smaller balsa blocks. No matter, I will band saw off the excess and use it later. Better to have too much than too little.

My plan today was to burn off the brush pile, but it is way to windy to risk it, so I'm stuck inside.

Great project for a cold winter day!!…. Nothing wrong with adding cross grain tips to the wing as in the photo…. Might even make it more warp resistant….. Yes, A little waste with the blocks….. A piece of it may do for a canopy…. Mine will get a wooden canopy for sure….A photo for a detail on the landing gear that’s not on the drawing …for when you get to it…. It’s all one piece…. 4-1/4” across its width - track….. The length of the gear legs is on the drawing….. I peeled all the crusty cloth tape off mine for a re-do….

Nothing wrong with adding cross grain tips to the wing.

Out of necessity as the airfoil SIG only measured 12". I will move the template down a bit to include the best camber when I cut it. Somehow I have the uneasy feeling that I'm really going to screw this thing up. Smile

It is bitter out there, 19 degrees with wind........Wasn't going to, but..............out to the shed and the band saw, easier and quicker than with an exacto. With the band saw complaining about the cold I cut the thing.

Nice Bob!…Please do Very Happy ….. Still a mystery to me who made the kit…. Maybe the bellcrank mount is a hint?….. It has a brass eyelet with the flange on the bottom of the wing….The eyelet protrudes thru a brass washer on top of the wing and is peened over….The bellcrank pivots on a 2-26 machine screw….Have you, Or anyone else seen that before?

Since you first started this thread I have searched every known avenue looking for a Gee Bee kit of this hollow log style and these dimentions. Nothing even close. I looked at every Scientific ad that I have in my library too. More nothing.

The hollowed out interior looks professionally done and smacks of a kit but now with your bell crank attachment picture, I'm not so sure. It looks to me like a one-off time consuming procedure that only an individual would undertake. Somebody loved your plane. But, the decals..........I would love to date them. Easy to find in any plastic Gee Bee kit.

The plot thickens.............

Thanks for your research Bob, Me too with the same results….. I looked at several Scientific hollow log plans on OZ…. Looks like they used a wood “button” glued into to the wing then a wood screw into that to pivot the bellcrank on….. No big deal, Just interesting to try and find out who might have made it….I’ll add another washer on the bottom of the wing on mine…. Just the flange of the eyelet along with the washer on top doesn’t look very secure….

Regarding the bellcrank, I'll need to find my Perfect/Sullivan bellcrank stash. While the aluminum bellcrank looks "Scientific," the hardware looks more like what came in the pre-packaged bellcrank kit back in the day. Maybe I'll find those kits...they are lost in the Trainwreck I call the "Hobby Closet." I also looked for the firewall/landing gear for my expired Scientific P-40. If I weren't looking for it, I'd have kept pushing it this way and that way in that same train wreck!

This isn't my thread, but I'm subscribed. I hope to start my rendition shortly. I think it would be cool if we had a single thread for any and all builds. This one is up to two now. WooHoo!

RSV Bob...you popped the bellcrank kit up...yep. Now I'm back to RDW's has a Scientific bellcrank.

Thanks guys, I hope you get one going Jim, We’ll start a Thompson series Thumbs Up

I found another bellcrank in a parts drawer that I “think” is Scientific …. Gee Bee’s is a good bit smaller…. 1-1/4” between the leadouts…… Doesn’t mean Scientific couldn’t have made a smaller one though….

Confusion factor.

I'm getting ready to cut balsa to position the wing but the horizontal stab on your model shows it placed in the same plane while the full scale model has it positioned well above.

Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 P1018896
Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 P1018897
Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 P1018898

Before I cut anything I would like opinions about the best approach to take, in-line horizontal stab or above.  Above would be mostly a guesstimate and maybe present a more difficult solution to positioning the elevator control linkage.

roddies picture.

Old CL Gee Bee - Page 4 Gee_be12

Also now i'm wavering about where to place the bell crank, above or below the wing.  Above the wing easier but messy, below the wing presents a cleaner appearance.

This in-line horizontal stab position would indicate a home-built, a kit would have it positioned as in the full-scale Gee Bee.
