portable grass runway

portable grass runway
This is my 35 foot long portable grass runway which is fully adjustable for what ever radius is needed (since starting spring last year I have been doing this solo) made from 24" x 36" polycarbonate sign board material. It's constructed just like a folding ruler. The polycarbonate is nitro fuel safe. I carry about 4 planes (in a box with lanyard), my pit equipment and runway in a folding wagon all in one trip from my car to the flight circle. It provides me with a flat stable surface for my planes to take off from.
Re: portable grass runway
Cool Idea , so it slides together as a one piece with some sort of string to hold together , got a packed up pic of it ?

Re: portable grass runway
The whole runway is fully assembled ready to use like a giant folding ruler.
The panels rotate horizontally and unfurl on the axis of the carriage bolts that face up.
The starter board is loosely spiked in to the ground and the downstream boards lap like fish scales securely bridging over all the terrain.
There is no step greater than 1/4 inch down in the direction of travel.
I set my handle loosely with a ground spike and carry the plane over the panels pushing them with my foot so the center of the carriage bolts match the center of the plane.
The line radius matches the runway.
Re: portable grass runway
That Great , may have to use that idea for a shorty runway since I fly balsa it only thats about 15' to take off )most times)LOL Alot better than assfalt

Re: portable grass runway
Very neat CLG, I like it. Beats sheets of used cardboard. But, I have taken off a Cox Corsair on asphalt using about 15/20 feet.
So that is what it is, I made it a Cosmic Wind of some manufacture.

Re: portable grass runway
That's a great way to handle grass fields. Bravo!
I keep six pieces of thin rubber diamond-plate sheet in the trunk of my car for the same purpose. I really wanted to use coroplast, but that would have come out of hide. The rubber sheet came at a price I could NOT refuse. It sure does lay down well...but it is a lot heavier than I like to deal with. You can see it in my Scientific P-40 and other videos.
I set my radius by using my stooge-string stabbed at the center of the circle. The string has two identifier knots two feet apart at the "center end," and of course the connector to my stooge for the other end. The two feet is to make up for an arms length to the edge of my mats, and given my arm, an airplane 1/2 WS and lead-outs, that puts the plane right about in the middle of the curved runway.
If I knew a sign guy, I'd switch over in a blink!

Cool
I like that idea, even for an RC runway. Relatively inexpensive and light weight.
I have an as new never run extra 300 ( made in china apart from the engine ) just like in the picture.
30 foot lines, is that correct please.
I have not checked yet but are the Cox plaines instruction sheets on here please ?

COX 300 Special
Coxfledgling
I had my 300 Special on 20 foot 10 pound test Spiderwire lines. It produced a slow up, down, level flight experience very similar to the COX Piper J3 Cub (made in China) trainer.
If I replaced the massive nose wight with a lighter nose weight and switched to a high performance prop I could probably get better performance on longer lines.

CF,
Look left to the gray box below "More Latest Topics."
The gray box contains "Documents and Manuals (login required)."
You'll find a pile of Owners Manuals, to include the Super Sport trainer.
PS...the manual indicates 20-25 foot lines. That's for dacron.
