Hi Kim,
Love this story...
Here is mine:
We smashed and bashed almost all of our Cox BB.049 CL 'Mouse Racers' that day.
It was awesome fun. Pavement School Yard.
Somehow, none of the many younger spectators got killed. It was very close, several times.
Not sure,
How Adults allowed us, But...
This '8yr old kid' brought his Dad's fishing pole. And an idea.
Everyone went home because of supper time...
There was daylight left. And last of Cox Red Can of fuel.
We rigged the 35ft lines through the 10ft fishing pole.
All I can say is try it. It is Awesome.
20 yrs later, I somehow met up with him again...
That same pole, no kidding,
Has caught ~5lbs Lake Ontario Salmon/Trouts every year.
I cannot make up stories like this.
I like all Your Stories Kim,
Thank You.
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Here's a similar concept in the Delta Dart II "Amazer" designed by Frank Ehling of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. It was featured in Dick Sarpolus' book.. but I can't find anything on the web about it.
Here's another CEF thread about it from 2018

Seeing the U-Reely handle in the above whip powered model brings back some memories. My friend decided to show some family members his control line flight. He was using a U-Reely. For the record, this is about the worst handle you could choose to use. It's heavy, cumbersome and too large with it's line spacing much too far apart. We get the plane started, I can't remember the plane but I do remember the colors. He was flying level and occasionally he would go up and down. Mind you, were probably 11 years old and these early flights were essentially unassisted by adults until this showing. As he goes up and down uncertain if a loops is in the cards, I see him plant his legs apart and proceeds to go into a figure 8. At this moment, the U-Reely becomes a Un Reely and the line starts feeding out. His uncertainty as to what's going on becomes readily apparent when he tries to run backwards for some crazy reason. The plane then hits a light pole, the only one in the field mind you. I just remember the sound of the engine abruptly stopping and the explosion of pieces flying all over. I can still see it in my head to this day. It looked like gold glitter now showering down in a huge debris field. His uncle was so excited to see it explode comes walking over and tells us how spectacular that was. Neither my friend or myself found it very amusing.

U Reely comments
My best friend owned one of these and we shared it between our planes. I recall that we had very heavy lines (can't recall the gauge) and that it was indeed pretty bulky. As far as heavy goes, how long do Unkie flights last anyway? As he owned the handle, he had a habit of cutting notches into the plastic for each plane that he crashed. I thought it sacrilidge to deface the handle but I guess it doesn't much matter 60 years later.
Never thought about the huge line spacing.....
