Canadair CL415 Water Bomb Run
Hi All,
Check this out:
https://x.com/JustinTrudeau/status/1877356087944315207
Imagine,
Full throttle, full load, calculating the 80knot tailwind...
It takes 1.5 seconds after hitting release...
And the wing loading halves, in a high G turn, missing smoke...
Then turning upwind, to go get another load... for another dump.
10 seconds of filling, on the closest water....
I cannot even imagine the wind turbulence around those hills.
Helicopter pilots are just as great pilots.
No one can fly from downwind, in all the smoke.
Godspeed to all those involved...
Take care,
Not fun,
Dave

Re: Canadair CL415 Water Bomb Run
Hi All,
I did some math...
The first Canadair CL215 had radial engines, perfected in WW2.
It took three years, to do the DamBuster raid on the Rhine river. (Barnes Wallice/bouncing bomb/etc.)
If a single 'unhindered' CL215 got to do the job,
Flying 8hrs per day,
The reservoir would have been 1/4 full...
Also,
More water payload than two B-17 Flying Fortress's.
It boggles my mind.
Filling the bomb bay, in 10 seconds, skimming over water at 1/2 throttle.
This is data is on the CL215.
The CL 415 is even better !
I am curious,
When will the Canadair CL515 show up ?...
Soon?
Take care,
Tough Job,
Respect,
Dave

One of the Canadian CL 415s was hit by a drone, which certainly slowed down the effort to control the flames, which is a shame I think.

Hi David,
Wing LE repairs are getting done...
The skill of the pilots is amazing:

(Probably not footage from California now, but shows the skill an guts involved... )

Also looks like they got a good chunk of the drone as well. Looks like a DJI Mini 3. If they got the 'heart of it, they just may find the individual responsible.

But the main thing is everyone walked away safe from this incident.

Hi NEW22,
Could have been a 'fire fighting' drone. No one knows yet.
ALL drones got grounded.
The 'semi' rib is getting installed, sheeting just to go.
The best video I can find,
Is from 12 yrs ago.
The Spanish CL415's protect Europe too...
Check out the 'control throws' when fully loaded !
Freaks me out..
Crank the music too...

Take care,

Re: Canadair CL415 Water Bomb Run
Hi All,
Imagine your coffee cup, divide it in half, put it on the bottom of a nice big Canadair CL415...
Half that area actually... more like 1/8... Way stronger than stainless steel.is needed..,
Gunn a CL415 from a dead calm water...
10 seconds later, you take off, with a full load...
More than two B-17s worth...
This freaks me out...
I sometimes wonder why,
There is not a CL515 yet...
Mabee when,
The Climate will Change...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave
