Cox Engine of The Month
1/2A and wind.......

1/2A and wind.......
As you may know I am moving from San Antonio to Oklahoma City this month. I have spent a few years In North Texas about 2 hours from OKC and the wind was tremendous. My concern is that since I like small planes will I ever be able to fly? How much wind can these little planes handle? I assume every plane is different. Has anybody here ever flown in OK or live in a windy area? What do you do?
I guess I don't expect much of an answer but, I am concerned about my flying situation. I plan on getting involved with the local club. I do know that early morning and late evening the wind does die down some.

Re: 1/2A and wind.......
in colorado there is almost always wind, sometimes our norm amount of wind 20+mph. That really stinks, 1/2a im not sure what they can handle, but the little parkzone micros can handle 5mph

Re: 1/2A and wind.......
Fly the larger 1/2A planes in wind over 10-15, even 20 mph. You need power and speed and extra wingtip weight. Make it a little more nose heavy than you normally would. You might be better off with a slat-wing like a Stuntman23, since it has less lift, and at least a Tee Dee with a 4 pitch prop. Keep the stunts to a minimum with the wind at your back. Unfortunately a 4p prop is crappy for stunts, but if the wind is 10 or less mph, you can drop to a 3p prop. Try not to let the plane get too high or it can unexpectedly wing over. Use the lowest drag line you can and restrict it to about 35-40'. You'll get so much better that when a calm day comes, you can do tricks you didn't know you could do.
You'll be fine. Just extra fun, and keep the equipment simple and rugged.

No, actually Rusty I would be interested in CL info as well. I have a Wizard and a Jr. Satan too. I eould imagine UC would be more forgiving.

windy Kansas
https://www.windfinder.com/ is my go to site for wind conditions.
I am developing an inventory of places to fly 1/2A based upon day of the week, surrounding terrain, and foliage. I flew Sunday dawn/sunrise in steady southernly 7 MPH gusting to 12 MPH winds but my spot was just about dead calm
After the sun rose the winds shifted to due west and that put an end to flying for that spot
