What are my options for bench testing? I'd like to have something that lasts longer then (2) D cells.

I think most guys have a rechargeable Ni-Starter. Here is a link for some good ones. Hobby People, Tower Hobbies and other stores sell diffferent versions of their house brand, but these are the best I have found.

Ya I've seen those. I even had one when they first came out years ago. I would really like to find something I can plug into 110v.

I guess you can make one with a power converter with a starter clip wired in. These Ni -Starters will give you at least 100 starts per charge.

I use my field box for bench testing as well as in the field.....

Glow plug Battery? Panel_10

I use it for bench running on this old movable bathroom unit, it's on wheels so that I can move it anywhere I need it

Glow plug Battery? Panel_11

12v 7A lead/acid gel battery, which I got free from a friend who installs fire alarms, but they are quite cheap to buy, as long as you have the correct charger (Which are also cheap) a full charge will last for weeks.
As you will see in the above picture, I have the amperage control marked to make sure that I don't give glowheads too much current, which would burn them out.
I certainly would never go back to either dry batteries or those clip-on starters, both go flat just when you need them!

What I really like about the Rcats system is that you can submerge a glow plug in fuel and the system reads that and keeps applying power until it lights,,submerged (dont try that at home kids). You get a glow plug wet with a standard 1.5v setup and it douses the glow and very slowly cooks that off until it glows again. I am sure you have all seen that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tP73WuHSOA
A youtube I shot of that system.

Another option Travis is the Hobbico Sper Hot shot 2, which is a 5000 Mah D cell recharghable head lock glow driver. Bought mine back in 06 and it is still working great. Then pick up the Sullivan MO58 adapter, then you have both glow plug bases covered. I also have this setup and use it from time to time. Both setups are very portable for the field box and dont take up space or add big weight.

You can buy a power panel similar to these:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0095p?FVPROFIL=&FVSEARCH=power+panel

and convert a surplused PC powersupply to provide 12v/5v (12v battery substitute/RX battery substitute) here:

http://web2.murraystate.edu/andy.batts/ps/POWERSUPPLY.HTM

Use the converted PC supply to run the panel at home and a 12v gelcell to drive the panel at the field.

I expect that both the Hobbico and Tower panels use the same circuitry --- they just have different faceplates.

One of the good points with 1/2A is that you don't have to carry all the stuff that others do. Try using a proper glowclip first.
The key to good battery life is to prime and flip the engine over until it feels right and only then do you connect the battery and it should fire right up.

It works but it's a little big. I prefer the Cox clip for the 020s. For 049s it the clip to go with, as it holds very securely, so you know you have a good connection.

This is THE clip for hardcore Cox fans. Very Happy I don't remember what goober told me to do it, as it lasts about 90 seconds before fading.

The clip has failed once at the contacts, and I had to re-solder them.

My opinion for what it's worth, based on many years experience, avoid plastic connectors like the plague! They snap where the cable connectors join the metal contacts. Every single one I've owned has broken in the exact same place.

Thanks for the heads-up! I already had one of these and just ordered two more. As previously mentioned, they're best for the .049s.

Venom makes a headlock adapter like the black one in joes pic. Comes with a tamyia end on it. I bought one and nipped the tamyia piece off and adapted it to a Deans connector so i could peak charge my super hot shot on my Fma charger

Venom #1616.

I know, I've only had this one for +30years and now the other side broke too, it's really annoying, I may actually have to buy a another one soon....

The newer ones look a little stronger though.

Talking about old-school, I can't find the large drycell batteries anymore.

Yes I have seen the Hobbico ones, but no one have them locally here. We used to be able to pick them up at the local hobby store, but the young guys behind the counter now will just look at you strangely and try to sell you a ready built foam plane instead, where is the fun in that...
