Cylinder wrench flats
I have recently purchased a few engines that do not have flats for a wrench below the glow head. When did cox stop making these?
Thanks.
Jim

Jim,
The wrench flats on the cylinders were actually a later production modification.
If your cylinder has no flats most likely it is an earlier one I am thinking pre- 1980's but, I could be wrong. I am sure some Cox history loon will chime in shortly!
Just kidding! We're all loony!

Re: Cylinder wrench flats
I hear a few new ones got away without the flats too.
You can improvise a strap wrench out of leather or stiff rubber. Or squeeze it between two pine blocks in a vice and turn the crankcase.
I have not tried the latter method, so I can't take responsibility if you egg it.
Cox originally meant for the forked end of the wrench for this, but if I were to try it, I would wrap the forks in tape or something to keep it from galling the exhaust ports.

Re: Cylinder wrench flats
I had this issue with one of my old babe bees, and had results with rubber wrapped tightly around the cylinder, and then using small pliers that the jaw curve was close to cylinder diameter. Pliers are a BIG no no, on this forum, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.... See post entitled "NO PLIERS" for some good help and advice for this problem.

Re: Cylinder wrench flats
I'm not 100% sure when they started including the milled top fin on all engines, I do know my 1971 Baja Bug engine has them, my 1966 QZ has them and a 1978 pull start car engine has them. It seems to be that all post 1978 engines have the milled top fin. Since the slit exhaust was a creation of Leisure Dynamics and Leisure Dynamics owned Cox in those days you can find slit cylinders without the milled top fin.
