RR1 rotary valve? Empty RR1 rotary valve?

I have never seen a RR1, except in pictures. How does the rotary valve lay out in this engine. Are there pictures of a disassembled one, or drawings that detail this? I find lots of photos of assembled engines and it looks like a reed engine.

I still don't have a RR-1 (surprisingly) but I do have pictures from all over the web as well as a manual available on my site compliments of Bernie. https://sites.google.com/site/coxenginecollection/instruction-sheets

There are a few more but I have to dig them up.

Nice stuff Rusty, I see the one you have has a spring starter, and a shiny crankcase. Does that mean that RR-1 valve, crankshaft, and tank would fit newer engines? The RR-1 crankcase finned nose, is too cool to beat up with a spring starter. Very Happy

The earlier RR-1s has un anodised crankcases that is what rusty has.

A rr-1 crank would fit in a average crankcase. I have always believed that the reason the rr-1 case has fins is for cooling as the case produces more heat than a reed valve engine. The crank would have to be an rr-1 crank with the little extension on the crankpin that drives the rotary disc. If you do see a "RR-1" without the fins on the case, I would ask the seller for an inside view too. Mud, one of our members has a few of the first RR-1s that didn't have the grooved tank or case. The cylinder is just a #1 that has 2 bypass, open exhaust with SPI.

(I'm am very tired right now, lol, took 20 minutes to type this)

This is one Mudhen built. It has a regular Bee crankcase because he didn't want to gall it up with the spring starter, which did not come with an RR1. That was my little secret until now. Smile

You know, I knew you got it from Mud but I never knew the story on how you got it. If it is one of those Shh deals then you don't need to answer.
lol!

The Bee crankcase was the only part I hadn't mentioned. Last winter Mud built it and bench ran it to break it in. I don't know what plans he had for it. I suppose he had seen my YouTube flying videos and read of my control line adventures. One day he asked me, if he shipped it to me, would I give it some flight time to complete the break-in, knowing an engine won't reach its peak break-in just static running on the bench. I was surprised and honored to have been chosen for the job, I agreed to bolt it to a plane and give it a workout, climbs and dives to hit all the RPM ranges and stresses, and promised nothing too radical so as not to wreck the antique little jewel. Mud said no, man, go for it, give it all you've got.

It was still Winter and too cold and windy to fly, but I used that time to check it out in the shop and get familiar with it. I was amazed, the damn thing spun up to almost 20,000 RPM... with a 5.5" prop... with a muffler on it! Unbelievable. Several weeks passed and we talked about it off and on, and I assured him I would get it in the air soon. On or about my birthday, March 25, he PMd me and told me I could keep it if I wished. Wow! what an offer. I never was sure if he knew it was my birthday, but the timing was right. I didn't accept it right off the bat, as I was afraid he might suffer from giver's remorse. I replied that we'd just stick to the plan and if, after I flew it, he still felt that way, I would give it a happy home and a steady job. No, no, he said, it's yours to keep. I thanked him for his great generosity and fast tracked the plan to fly.

So that brings to the above video. It screamed through the sky with a MA 5.5x3 prop and a tank of castor-added Glowplugboy. It pulled on the lines harder than a Black Widow ever had and I did a bunch of safe inside loops. I didn't do any outsides or 8s, just so I wouldn't wreck it on its maiden flight and video. Since then, I've only flown it once, but I turned it up to my usual level of wildness. I haven't flown it again yet, not because I don't want to, I've just been suffering from too much unplanned life and other times my creaky body just won't go when playtime finally comes around. And rain rain rain.

The Li'l Satan/RR1 has been loaded with all her gear on the red Radio flyer flight wagon for 2 weeks now, patiently waiting. I have an old college friend coming to visit this weekend and I know he'll want to play with me. The weather forecast is good. So I'm making it a mission to fly the Satan and maiden the Baby Flite Streak Saturday. And video it.

And now you know... The rest of the story... Good day.
