Does anyone know what Cox airplanes used the Sure Start type of back plates and if the engine were Sure Starts or porduct engines with a Sure Start back plate?

If "Sure Start" also means what we called the "Horse Shoe" backplate, the PT-19's started using them when Cox stopped supplying them with a complete Babe Bee.

Kim --

I don't believe the horseshoe backplate alone qualifies as a Sure Start. There were a number of engines that used some form of the plastic horseshoe starting back around the early seventies - your example of the PT-19 is one of them. The Sure Start design is similar in that it uses a horseshoe style plastic backplate, but came in the mid-nineties with the "snorkle" style choke tube. To be called a Sure Start, I believe the snorkle with the NV support must be present.

Did any of the horseshoe backplates use
the cap reed retainer, or did they only use
retainer springs ?

Yeah..l guess that's probably the case. I was kinda AWOL during the Sure Start debut, and wasn't sure if if DID include the snorkel.

Here are some of the "Product Engines" used over the years. The red one is referred to as the "Postage Stamp" backplate and has a fine threaded needle.
