Electric Flight Empty Electric Flight

Post  ian1954 Sun Jan 27, 2013 5:07 pm

Although I have a large collection of glow and diesel engines, there is nowhere close to home where these are allowed to be flown.

Even at some distance, the only Cox engines I can see being allowed are the RC 05, RC 09 or the Queen Bee in order to comply with noise regulations.

So, I thought I would investigate electric and couldn't resist popping in the local ModelZone shop. Not my idea of a "model" shop as almost everything is "ready to fly".

Anyway, the friendly sales staff entertained me and recommended that a foray in RC would be best done indoors with a helicopter. My recollection of my helicopter days wre bound with frustration, time consuming adjustments, expensive breakages and altogether expensive.

I could not believe that 3.5 channel Helicopters (IR) were being offered for £19.95 to £29.99. They recommended a choice of three to start with and I chose this.

Electric Flight Heli_010

After unpacking, fitting the batteries to the transmitter and charging the Helicopter - I was amazed!

I had a few false starts because I was too "namby pamby" with the lift off but once in the air - it flew, was unbelievably controllable, the gyro is excellent and apart from a few collisions due to my less than delicate control - it is simple and easy to fly. I can walk around the house flying it!

While I was there I saw this

I cannot resist - watch the video - although I doubt it had retracting undercarriage!

The name of the indoor learning game is "spare parts" Hope you already bought a spare rotor.

Can always go with electric control line.

That's very cool, Ian, flying and taking pictures! I tried one a couple of Christmases ago when my friend bought himself a pair of cheapies. I don't think they were even as sophisticated as yours. His ceiling was too low and his floors were too high for me though. So I took it outside but his trees were too wide. Then again it was the holidays, so it could have been this: Happy New Year Smoking .. Beer Cheers

Nice hell, but I would of suggested a Blade mCX or mCX2, which you can find used ones same price as the one you just bought. Spare parts are available anywhere and they are hobby class helicopters. With that being said, good luck with yours... practice, practice, practice. I hope spare parts are easy to find for that as you will crash helicopters, just part of the game.

I have 5 toy grade helicopters, and like them all. One of them I can control with my iPod over WiFi. Spares are not usually available, but they come with spare rotors and lipos can be replaced. Plus, when you slam one into the wall the highest it could cost you is 10-$15.

Always wanted an MCX or mSR. Maybe I'll find one at the upcoming swap meet.

Now John - I am sure that I have seen a video somewhere of you flying a helicopter indoors at work! Maybe I imagineered it!

I am also worried about your liking of washing mashines but maybe you are addicted to things that spin.

Thanks again for the insurance pointer - why am I keen?

I couldn't resist this

http://www.modelzone.co.uk/radio-control-rc/aircraft/horizon-parkzone-ultra-micro-spiitfre-mk-lx-ready-to-fly.html

I am still trying to work out how you take the landing gear off after take off and replace it ready for landing!!! (see the video)

I also think I should make my first return to flying with something a little slower. It will have to be electric - all combustable fuel engines are banned in my Borough.

When I have more time I will post all the details of this - needless to say, I think that the electric motors driving propellors are mor dangerous than fueled engines. (They are quiet and tend not to stop on striking something like a fueled engine (well, the smaller ones anyway)).

Yes, electrics are significantly quieter than fueled engines, but they are not quiet by any means. A good portion of the sound of a propeller drivel model airplane is from the propeller.

As for the stopping bit, some ESCs are able to handle that. Some timers for control line and free flight also have RPM feedback, KR Governor timers specifically.

Also if the motor is held stalled for more than a few seconds a number of ESCs won't handle the heat buildup and will "let the smoke out" or worse, start on fire!

Unfortunately my club is electric only (dont ask}. Since my new obsesion is Cox engines, I'm thinking electric motor, extend the motor shaft. through Babee Bee back plate, remove crank and piston. Hey presto, electric Babee Bee. It will still be electric but at least the model will look cool and have a throttle.

Cheers Flying

I believe there is a motor like that on RCG with some information on how it was done.

John,

lol!

Half a story is "wot" you have told me. I should give you "wot 4". Within 10 minutes of researching this, I got the full up signs and took a break.

Being of the "not having flown for some considerable time" and when I did "things were different then!" I quickly realised that this model is not ready to fly and requires more goodies to make it ready.

Simples, I thought. It only needs a transmitter and a receiver (took a while to work that one out!)

Then I looked at these and ................!!!!$$$$&&&&********!!!!!!!!!

My previous incarnations saw the conversion from 27MHZ to 35MHZ. Boxy things, with sockets and wires, Cost - varied with number of channels. Mode 1 or Mode 2 - pays your money, makes your choice.

Today! I got as far as looking at Spectrum thingies. £100 to many hundreds. Some things not compatable with others.

Mode1, 2, 3, and 4
DSM2, DSX modulation ????????
2.4 GHZ
