yep, i had to snicker a little myself...it's one thing if you don't know what its worth to start high, but it's another to start crazy high.

Looking at the seller's listings i kind of get the impression he's not 100% on board on his prices, the green Shrike was a deal at the asking price and the early tether car engine was fair.

My biggest peeve with any seller is when they claim a year for something or that it's something in particular, when in reality its not. They're either full of it, clueless, trolling or had gotten bad info and ran with it.

I always felt it was best to state only the facts and as a buyer to buy the item not the story.

Mark:

To be nice let's go with "the presumption of innocence" on this one. We of long experience in the Cox hobby have learned to be suspicious and don't fall for unsupported claims about Cox engines.

Hi Dave,
Yes, I agree, that's what I meant with not being 100% 'on board' and likely going with poor info.

I am afraid that in this instance and many more similar "caveat emptor" takes precedence over "caveat venditor".

Let the "buyer be aware" is a precedent in all private sales and let the "seller be aware" only starts to apply to "professional" sales instances or where it can be demonstrated that the seller should have expertise in the product and its description.

post ended Empty 1956 Babe Bee

Post  n-rob Thu Mar 28, 2013 2:51 pm

Well I went with the info I had and what I could find on the Babe Bee, mainly because of previous inquiries on Cox nuances were un-answered by all the Cox EXPERTS. Throwing jabs at a newbie is just not too cool, period. A little help goes a long way. Now if you wanted info in my area of expertise, 3D, giants, scale, pattern, should I treat a question as if from a red headed step child or gladly help. I choose to help. Thanks.

Hi Rob. Your engine looks like it is based in the 60's with a newer glow head, worth about 20-$25.

It's still a nice little engine. If you feel it is worth more, just add "OBO". (or best offer)

The guys here can help you out with pricing engines.

Thank you for the info. For $30 I will put it on a shelf and look at the dust collect for the next twenty years. Hopefully!! Smile Now how do I delete post?

Well said, Matt.

He's asking more than double what these engines normally sell for. Also knowing if the engine turns over freely and has good compression would be nice to add.

I must have missed your previous posts. I have been very busy in the past week and didn't get to post too much. I also haven't been watching eBay lately so not too sure what the current prices these go for on the open market. I have always priced nice old used Babe Bees between $12-$25 (depending on condition of course). I'll have to scan the completed listings on eBay later to see if those prices are still realistic. Start high if you have no idea what its worth.

56 babe bee should have the 3 piece piston, an unstamped #2 cylinder, early type large dia glow head, narrow neck crankcase, bright backplate, and a wafer thin web on the crankshaft.

I have noticed a slight difference in the narrow neck crankcases from the early 56 to the larter ones. Seems like the diameter of the neck is slightly smaller at the base of the crankcase on the early ones. I can see if I can get pics to show the difference.
