Had a whole passel of neighbor kids begging for more.
Flew my little friend's Kitty Cat plane today Sam_2412
Painted with metal flake color changing blue/green/purple paint, and a Monokote tail. It has whiskers too, but they're not visible in the picture.

I flew it the first time just to see if the thing would really fly. It was really tough to launch until someone who could follow instructions finally showed up. I put it through its paces and did a couple of loops, and the silly thing actually flies pretty well.

So I got my little friend to stand in the circle with me and tried passing off the handle to her after it got going steady. We tried a couple of times to share the handle without success, but I ended up finishing the flight a couple of times. Finally she had a grip on it and it was in the middle of a flat lap and I let her have it. Or that was the plan. But we stood there in center circle and watched it fly away, across the street, climbing, headed over my house when it chopped the tips off some maple branches and hung the lines and dove into the grass in my front yard.

Somewhere along the way it ate its tail off, but other than a broken prop it was good as new. She and I agreed we should try another day when there wasn't so much confusion, trying to heard all the neighbor kids and all. Besides, I think she kind of wanted to go swimming anyway. First good pool day too.
I had the camera out, but never turned on the thing. I'll have to remember to assign that job to someone else. But we all had fun. And they were clamoring to see the Baby Streak fly too, so I hooked it up, pumped the bladder lipping full and flew a couple of long exhibition flights. I was tired and to me, my flying was ugly, but I don't think they could tell. The field was weedy so I couldn't buy a good landing to save my life. I Almost greased a perfect one, but a dandelion patch flipped it right before it stopped. No crashes though. Good fun and a bunch of kids came into my shop and pointed out the planes they wanted to fly. My Refried bean was the most popular. The Fire plane, they called it(see my avatar). I had to spin it around on its hanger and show them the shattered wing though.

I'm happy with how the Kitty Cat flew. Dang Cub Scouts used to build them in two meetings. It took me six weeks. Rolling Eyes I think I'll add some nose weight next time to make the launches easier. It wants to flip over backwards on every launch right now. We can remove the weight when she gets the hang of it.

So that's the story of the Kitty Cat. Next project up, the T-28/MP Jet .061. That should be a quicker job, and after that comes the Yak-9 build.

Very good stuff Rusty! Bravo!

I would have liked seeing a pancake cat fly away on it's own. Sounds like the kids had some good fun as well. Maybe you planted a seed. If you had a nose heavy trainer you could put a bunch of em on the lines.

Also glad to hear you got some flight time too. I spent the day tearing out drywall and building new walls for my wife's pantry. Sad

Far out! You're doing your share to interest kids in aviation - even if it is with a Flat Cat! Good job, and, you get an Attaboy! This could also be teaching the kids about leash-laws for cats!

Our R/C club did a display and talk for a big bunch of Middle School kids on Thursday, at the Technical College. There were aviation industry people there, and they were able to ride in Cessna 172s during their outing. You could tell the "who cares" kids from the ones that just wanted lunch, and the ones who thought the stuff was neat. The day's adventure was kind of pushed on them, but your kids came around from a genuine curiosity.

We are always ambassadors, when we are out in the public with flying things that make noise, and when they see "real" things happen, the launches and landings, even your tree problem, they get to understand that a reset button isn't one of the accessories we have. Some of them "get it", and that's the ones that do well.

We were asked" Can you put bombs on it? Can you put machine guns on it? Can you shoot missles with it?" Kind of shows where their heads are at.

One thing - I showed my Baby Ring Master, and mentioned that I had- maybe $6 in the airframe, and that I paid $9 for the engine. Then I thought - where can a kid get an engine for $10 to go flying? Of the gazillions of engines produced, how does a kid get started in modeling with minimum expenditure? Or is it just no biggie to have to spend $300 to go fly something, now? For some kids who HAVE the genuine desire to fly something, what if their family cannot afford to set-aside that kind of money, to foster the interest the kid has?

Thanks for the greenie, Gus.
These kids, except the 9 yo girl, are very young, 5 and 6 and interested in a bouncy ADD sort of way. But they're excited, so maybe some of it will begin to soak in. They're new neighbors and will be around for a while, since Dad is re-enlisting in the Army at Fort Jackson(where the club field is). He is seriously interested and wants to learn to fly. So I can put one of the Baby Streaks in his hand and hopefully his enthusiasm will help inspire the younguns too. He is itching to go out to the club field and help me fly the Shoestring, and out there we can have some time away from the yard apes to concentrate on getting him his pilot's wings. His current hobby is hotrod motorcycles, but he can't really afford his hobby. Reminds me of when I had to back off of drag racing when I got married back in the early '80s.

Our cat, Missy, went flat the other day. Next door's tom cat was pumping her up for us.

The greenie was from me. The reason was because you are doing your part to proliferate the hobby! We should all follow your example in my opinion.

Or course Gus may have given you some rep points as well. Very Happy

Ron
