Cox Engine of The Month
Looky, See What I made?

Looky, See What I made?
First, is my interpretation of a Ring Master - in COX .010 size! This construction was a couple of weeks ago. I cut it from stiff, foam meat trays. I have flown it on SpiderWire 15' lines, but I think the length needs to be increased to about 20 feet. This thing really zips around! The relatively huge fuel tank gives a long 3 minute flight.
Finished last night, is a Gee Bee inspired by a Baby Ring Master, sporting the COX Tee Dee .051 that I will use in the contest. This plane borrowed the airfoil from the Baby Ring Master, with modification for a "D" leading edge and L.E. sheeting on top and bottom, with capstrips, top and bottom, too. It is constant-chord, however. The cowl is a vitamin bottle, cut neatly, and painted. I made wheel pants and fairings, but they're not happening! I found some wood wheels in my Bucket-O-Wheels, and cut a groove around them, and installed an "O" Ring, maybe that will keep the wood from chipping on the runway. This ought to be a blast! I think the tank location is a little high, but I didn't have one that fit in the space better, that still had decent capacity. I'm trying to learn aerobatics, so, if it gives funky engine performance, I'll change something. I need to quit building neat stuff, and make a clunker, that will actually perform!
I hope you like them! Comments welcome!

That is awesome. Probably the coolest CL plane I have ever seen. I might have to try building one. What size tank is that? 1/4oz?
Re: Looky, See What I made?
What did you glue the foam with? Does fuel affect the foam?

Re: Looky, See What I made?
Thanks Dude!
Which tank? I could measure the L x W x H, and post them, but I don't know the capacity of them. I'm gonna run the .051 in the driveway, here in a minute, The needle is inside the cowl, so I made an extension from a blue pushrod housing to put through the hole to set the mixture. It's kind of a "Set it, and forget it" thing. Ha ha.
JP,
I used just "Foam Safe" CA to whack the little one together. That seems to work fine. I did give the foam a light layer of spray paint, to help resist fuel saturation, though. The purple on it is tissue, applied with thinned-down canopy glue.
Thanks for your comments!
Gus.

Re: Looky, See What I made?
The Gee Bee flew on Thursday! It was nice here: light breeze and warm temperature.
This is the first 1/2A plane that I've flown, that actually has some pull on the lines! It might be just a tad nose heavy, as loops were getting pretty close to the ground. If you noticed in the pictures, there is no rudder offset, but the lead-outs are raked, and there is weight in the outboard wing tip. Had two flights, and no mishaps. Could stand to work in a larger fuel tank, somehow: the flights were shorter than I would have liked. Yay! This one works as I intended! I could remove the big cowling, and that would change the CG, without adding weight - then, it would fly even better!
Oh, and it looked so cool to see a Gee Bee buzzing around!

Re: Looky, See What I made?
The Gee Bee is balsa? Did you just freehand all of the dimensions for the wing and everything, or did you have a blueprint of some sort? You're a regular purple plane factory. I'm very impressed.

The cowling really makes that aeroplane stand out.

Re: Looky, See What I made?
Thanks, you all!
I used a Baby Ring Master airfoil, and sketched the fuselage and stabilizer shapes to a "sort-of-looks-like-it" dimension. The cowl is a vitamin D bottle. Everything is balsa, with some hardwood rails for the engine to mount to. There is some thin plywood to sandwich the rails in place.
I'm happy you like it enough to comment! I made paper templates, for patterns. If you want to see them, I'll figure out how to transfer them to you. It was a very quick build - about 5 evenings. The cool thing is...it flies well!

Re: Looky, See What I made?
Okay, I'm determined to get a C/L plane flying in the manner that I wish it to. Here is another scrapped-together attempt that I started building on Tuesday-after I received a new engine. (You know who you are!) Anyway, I ran the engine today, at the field, after contest flying time, and it really did run well! I normally run all my stuff in the driveway at home, then show up at the field with an engine that I don't have to tinker with. Mostly, that works! At the Tuesday Night Flights, I will maiden this do-dad, and see if it performs as expected. The fuselage is an old hollowed-out balsa wingtip from a no longer existing R/C plane, the ribs are 1/16" balsa with 1/8" bass or spruce spars, tail pieces are 3/32" balsa, and the covering is Ultracoat. No purple on it, this was all scrap stuff. There is a tire weight in the outboard wingtip; I hear that helps on windy days. Monowheel, with a whisker on the outboard tip-to keep it level at launch. Planning to fly on 33' SpiderWire lines. I'll give a report, when it goes. Here is a picture...Oh, wingspan is 18", length is 11" from firewall to elevator T.E. It's pretty lightweight; you can feel the lead in the green wingtip.

Pat King has the Micro Ringmaster kits for 20.00 shipped or you could buy the plans from him at PDK LLC Laser Cut Kits or find him on Stunthanger's Vendor Corner. You can read about the build Mike Hazel did on Flying Lines.

Re: Looky, See What I made?
The guys at the field named the green plane "Wingtip", when the saw and heard how it was constructed. It's an okay flyer, too. I need to play with propellers, to get the speed that I think it needs, but other than that, it was fine. This might just be the one that gets me looping correctly. I get panicky when I yank up elevator in one, and they keep telling me to fly through the loop. I need to trust what they say, they're good at flying C/L.

Crash it.......... Stop worrying about it, feed in up elevator until it get's real high then bring it around.

The good thing about crashing an airplane is, it make room for another on the build list. Not that we are hoping you crash.

Re: Looky, See What I made?
Doug,
What I was trying to say is once you stop worrying about crashing you can become more bolder in your efforts. I don't want you to crash it on purpose. Once I smash my new builds I fly them a lot better once repaired.

Yes, most definitely, once you have snapped the tail off and glued it back on they loop better anyway. LOL!!! the only way to learn is go for it... I'm just starting to get my loops all the way around, Remember, wind at you back and start high.

Re: Looky, See What I made?
You guys are all correct. I need to get over the fear of losing a plane. I just feel like the tension is not enough, or the speed is too slow, or, or, or... I'll let you know when I grow some, and get with the program. I know, this one isn't purple: so it will be no big loss! And, it WILL glue back together!
