Very nice, I like the custom touches. I would love to do an RC mod on one of those.

Absolutely stunning. My favorite toy as a kid. I owned many bugs and dune buggy's. I don't own any now and certainly would like to explore that option again. You did a terrific job on that bug. Ken

Nice!
I still love the orange version, I remember how excited i was firing that baby up on Christmas day, the smell of caster and nitro, only to watch it crawl at a slow walk!
I still think they're cool!
What did you do for tires?

Re: PHOTOS... My cleaned up cox baja bug
Wow, that's cool.
I remember one time at the drag strip, I pulled up to the tree next to an ugly old '63 Bug that looked like it had been used as a fishing car. I looked out the window of my '67 Camaro SS, 4-bolt 350, 5.13:1 rear gear, slicks, Muncie 4-speed Rock Crusher, big snorkel on the hood, and chuckled. Light turns green and that sumbitch was at the other end of the track coasting onto the return road before I hit 4th gear.
Just goes to show ya...

You did a good job indeed.
In fact, your bug is a Pontiac in disguise. Look at the speedo meter bulge on the "bonnet", as on the early Firebird. And there is more... The Royal Bobcat was a sort of performance package offered by the Royal dealership for the GTO. Proof that decals and model go together. Here are some pics found on the web:

Also some treaded tires

Nice Baja Bug, very good job!

I thought about doing some sort of restoration to mine but since it was originally my uncle's, just might as well leave it alone. I should start it up and run it one of these days. I had it going a few years ago in the church parking lot down the road, it drew a crowd LOL. The thing that worries me is the brittle oil soaked plastic.

Very nice you can clean it up a little but I will warn you once you clean it you will never want to run it again!!! maybe better leaving it dirty so you can have FUN with it.

Cox Baja Bug
This Baja bug looks Great, From what I have seen and Researched, The Baja bug and Dune Buggy were Actually the Beginning of the 1/12 Scale series Gas Cars from Cox. One of the most Dedicated Individuals Researching the Cox Toys, Dan Sitter,, Had mentioned to Me that He thought cox made 3 Million Dune buggys,, this is not Proven but if you see how many dune Buggys and Baja bugs come up on Ebay it is Obviuos that Many were Produced. A Good Friend of mine use to Buy the Baja bugs in 1969 and 1970 for about $7 USA Dollars,, quite a inexpensive toy!!! Just for the record the Dune buggys Came in Orange, Purple, and Green and a "Rootbeer" Brown color. Over and Above Production at the Cox Factory in the 1970s" A one Amos Ponder told Me Many Years ago that Disgruntled Employees of the Cox Company use to mix different color pellets on purpose to result in Oddball Colors. Evidently there was a Red and Green Iridescent Dune buggy Body color that was supposed to be Marketed for the Sears Department Store. Check out Gascarman.com and you will see some Cool cox Cars. I am currently working on Modifying a Orange Baja bug. The Metal Fuel tank is Tempermental when the engine heats up the Bugs and dune buggys sometimes shut down and lose power. A Installation of a DELRIN Backplate and REMOTE fuel tank will help longer run times. Bill

Awesome looking Bug. I've been looking for a Cox car off and on, waiting for one to go cheap on eBay. Your great restoration just fuels the fire. You did a truly great job cleaning it up.
