Too Cocky?

Too Cocky?
I was flying well tonight and was in the middle of a stunt frenzy when I lost sight of the clown in an overhead eight. It went behind my back and I heard it hit before I had a chance to turn around. Can you believe it didn't bust the MA prop!!!!

Nothing like a slice of humble pie.......

Cocky? Not at all.
Damage looks repairable and
you were FLYING!
Well worth it.

I got cocky and did that with my Satan about 2 months ago. I was literally trying to fly behind my back. Bad idea.

Yep,
I'm flying. Putting some serious time on that Medallion. I am going to switch to the contest TD on pressure.
The overhead eight is entered from a wingover so I wonder if I am doing the first loop on the wrong side? The outside is wide and goes way behind me so I have to think quick.

Re: Too Cocky?
I just seperated the wing from the fuse. What a mess!!!
The Clown is going to be down for a while. Not to worry though. I wish I had my BFS built right about now.....this puts a serious damper on my training. I wonder if I can get my Baby Ringmaster to fly like this one while I do repairs.
My guess is my many crashes have finally taken it's toll. Can't complain too much as my skills are improving and these kind of things are getting pretty infrequent.
Yes Rusty, I will remove the less than manly Clown decal.

Re: Too Cocky?
Dang, I've been offline all day, got a lot of catching up to do. Got my first smart phone today.
I almost busted the SS doing OH8s but for the opposite reason, not big enough loops and it fell out of the sky. A hot 1/2A won't fall like that. Watching some Youtube videos, pilots do it differently, but the best ones always have their knees bent so they can bend back and look up and behind. But the Baby planes are so fast you might rupture a disk trying to do that. I've been wanting to practice OH8s all week and haven't put a plane in the air since August 8th. I'd been planning to try it with the Baby Streak and the APC 6x2 on 40 or 45'.
Wayne and I are going Sunday with the SS so if I come to any revelations, I'll tell you what worked for me. I get confused just doing it in my head. Ron, you're doing it OTS style, right? Either way, you start like a wingover, let it fly straight overhead and then feed in up elevator for the first turn, and the first half loop should come to the 45 degree high(in AMA) level, and keep on turning until it's where you started the turn, then down elevator for the second half. And the hell of it is, you have to do all that twice, and finish the wingover without getting a back spasm.
Watch Paul Walker do a perfect one at 3:05, but it doesn't show his posture.

This shows him better at 1:44

Oh, yeah, I'm really sorry about the little Clown. That sucks.

re: oops
Ron: be sure to use a plywood or hardwood brace on both LE and TE sides of the wing. maybe even span a couple of ribs, like 4, for a little extra strength. light ply shouldn't add too much weight, but use good hard ply not the cheap stuff. happydadCribbs74 wrote:I was flying well tonight and was in the middle of a stunt frenzy when I lost sight of the clown in an overhead eight. Re: Too Cocky?
My Refried Bean is broken sort of like that, but a cleaner break. I haven't been sure how to fix it. I'll be watching this repair.

Re: Too Cocky?
My bean broke like that too. The LE cracked at a rib. I made a gusset, butt glued then put the gusset in and recovered.

Re: Too Cocky?
The wing is broken at the leading edge and trailing edge. For some reason I didn't heed my own advice (Ken's) and glass the TE. I built this one a while back so perhaps I didn't know about it at the time.
I have an Original 50's Matt Kania PDQ Baby Clown the wingspan is 2" shorter than the Brodak version, but it looks so much nicer in design. What I plan on doing is tracing the PDQ version onto a new piece of wood and using that in place of the old fuse. The old fuse has been snapped many times and is really just plain worn out. It's held together with epoxy and tooth picks. I will repair the Brodak wing and affix it to the PDQ fuse as it has a couple more sq" reuse the tail pieces and it should fly as well as the old one.
I really need a 1/2A stunt trainer to keep practicing so expect a quick turn around on this. Maybe it would be quicker to build th BFS.....
I will post pictures tonight so you can see the difference in the PDQ version.
P.S. Rusty the PDQ kit decal just says "Baby Clown" in script much less dorky. I'll make a copy of the original as it's probably pretty rare.

BTW thanks for the vids Rusty, looks easy when someone else does it. The OTS rules have you do three in a row of each horizontal, vertical and overhead.

Re: Too Cocky?
Paul Walker makes every thing look easy, don't compare yourself. I just watch his flights our contest a couple weeks ago. Be lucky he's not in your club, the Expert PA guys in our club have to fly against him every contest. That video was a few years ago by the looks of it.Cribbs74 wrote:BTW thanks for the vids Rusty, looks easy when someone else does it. Re: Too Cocky?
Think I know what I am doing wrong. I am trying to do a vertical overhead 8 instead of a horzontal one. I should be working left to right not front to back....

Re: Too Cocky?
Absolutely, look at your avatar. Your up elevator loop is over your right shoulder and visa versa. Making the turn to finish the exit is where I have yet to figure out the best body transition so as not to get off balance and ugly it up.Cribbs74 wrote:Think I know what I am doing wrong. Or fall down.
