Lew Woolard Fox .35

Lew Woolard Fox .35
I met up with Lew in Wichita Kansas. I hear he is legend with Fox reworks. I asked him to modify a NIB Fox .35 40th for me last time I was up that way. The engine sports
a Blue Hemi head, ST NVA, Stuffer backplate and altered timing for increased stunt performance.
I hope it performs as well as it looks as the rework is going to cost me twice what I paid for it!
Edit: Suppose I should add the picture!

Thanks Ken, I only figured out who he was after you told me. I just figured he was just some older guy who liked U-Control.
Phil, that is the part I am dreading! Never broken in a Fox before, but I hear it can be quite an ordeal.

It's good to hear Lew is doing well, i hadn't seen or heard of him for awhile. I got to meet him a couple times years ago at the Nats and Peoria contest. He was the king of reworked FP's and his small case Fox .40 is legendary. He modded a couple FP's for me, that i still have.
Ron, that Fox is almost too nice to run....almost! Should be a great one!

Yeah Mark,
He is getting up there in years, but seems to be doing well. All my engines are subject to be run at any time. I can't take them with me when I croak!

Re: Lew Woolard Fox .35
yep, i was just kidding, as a collector of sorts...
i'd love to fire up that Fox, but only with a wooden wide blade Rev-up or Top-flite prop ...I wonder what he did to porting on that and is it a stock ST needle? I hate to say but i copied his porting on the FP's, actually kinda common set up.

Put it in a bench mount, 10x6 prop. Do your warm-up and stretching exercises before trying to flip. The first run is a bear. In fact it is worth planning to do this over a couple days.
This is lapped iron, "gently" mating surfaces is key.
If you don't have a fuel tank set up that is fine for the first round.
Prime it and flip it to start a few times on prime.
After about a half a dozen good barks on prime fuel the tank. Make sure you can access the fuel line to pinch it off. If the head is too hot to touch let it cool off.
On my stock nva 5-7 turns out. Flip till it starts and is running on tank fuel, then pinch the line to shut down (5-10 sec?). Repeat this 6x+ allowing to cool between runs. You shouldn't need to mess with the needle once you get a good start, it won't run long enough during this round.
My arm about fell off by now.
Now you can start looking for wet 4-cycle rich with the needle. Start, run half a minute, shut down. Repeat 6x+ allowing it to cool between runs.
Next is minute long runs, wet 4-cycle, then start looking for minute long wet 2-stroke runs, then you can start running for longer time and seeking higher RPM.
About now your first quart should be empty, or very nearly so.
The engine is ready to run but a long way from fully broken in. Consider bench running another quart through it, 2 oz at a time, but you can put it on the airplane now if you want.
It is important to allow the engine to cool to touch, or cold, between runs. It took me 3 separate days to do this.

Re: Lew Woolard Fox .35
Yeah I have a .40FP that has been modified and I was shown how to do it with a degree wheel.
I'll take a vid of the break in. It may end up on my Shoestring. Maybe.....
Thanks for writing that up Phil, I will refer to it when the time comes.

Re: Lew Woolard Fox .35
Lew had mine ready for me tonight, at the Tuesday Night Flights. It's gonna be a sweet engine. I'm going to build an Olympic, or something from the 60's to fly with it. I like the style of stunt ships, from those days. Maybe a P-51 Stunter...Hmmm...

Re: Lew Woolard Fox .35
The engine Lew did for me is a brand-new, 60th Anniversary Edition.
I have been perusing the plans websites, to find just the perfect ship to inaugurate the engine. Gonna be a finicky build, too, because I want it to be as perfect as the engine. That means: light, and the best wood that I can choose for the model. No way in heck that the engine will be installed on an ARF! So, it's gonna be something that looks good in purple. Wait - everything looks good in purple!

Hey Ron,
Do you think you'll have it flying at the Tulsa Contest?

No, it's not really needed. I'll be flying my Ringmaster that has the '52 Fox on the nose. I'll probably make a bigger impression on the judges that way.
It's probably going to reside on my unbuilt Shoestring. That way I can compete in classic and Foxberg. Still undecided though.

That's an expensive engine to run in Foxberg!Cribbs74 wrote: It's probably going to reside on my unbuilt Shoestring. That way I can compete in classic and Foxberg. Still undecided though.
