Found a Cox Dune Buggy in its Box!
Its a little late but about 2 1/2 weeks ago, I went to a city-wide antique sale/flea market in Oronoco, MN. I bought a handful of things such as a few porcelain knob insulators (as in knob and tube wiring, I collect this crap), a mid 30s electric heater, a heap a 8-tracks and this Cox Dune Buggy. Paid $60 for it from the original owner.

Manual and paperwork

3 of the 4 tires are flat and missing a headlight and mount is broken, the broken piece is in the box though

Parts still on tree and sealed in bag

Wrench set still sealed in bag
And in case anyone cares, here's the heater and most of the tapes I bought.

In good shape for its age. Paid $10

These are most of them, there's some more but I already mixed them up with the rest of my tapes. Paid $1 each.

Coming down your way was a pretty rare soundtrack for Three Dog Night. Anytime I ever tried to play old 8-tracks they end up breaking. Ken

80% of them do break after 1 or 2 plays. The glue holding the foil splice can dry out and let go so I just replace the foil with new foil tape anyway. Most of the foam pads also deteriorate into a soft and mushy or hard and crumbly mess.Ken Cook wrote: Coming down your way was a pretty rare soundtrack for Three Dog Night. Do you have classic car or something with an 8-track deck in it? I can hook you up with some tapes or fix your broken ones if you want.

I'm going to rebuild the engine and get it running then I suppose I'll have to find some tires. It would be nice if the original molds for these "Cox Special" and "Cox Slick" tires would turn up somewhere. I'm never going to open and snap the parts off the tree.Cribbs74 wrote:Nice Buggy!

I used to grow a crowd when I would run the Baja Bug in the parking lot down at the park, people who wanted to know what it is and people who remember them.
Re: Found a Cox Dune Buggy in its Box!
Many years ago I worked on a two story house built in the 30s that had knob and tube wiring, it had two bare wires strung down the attic and the drops for the rooms came off them down through the walls using the tubes and knobs. The house was in such bad shape we wound up dismantling from the top down and put the whole house in dumpsters.
The only thing I saved was this wire nut because I was amazed they used them back then, its yours if you want it.

Sweet Find!! Whoever had the 8-tracks had a cool taste in music. I have a copy of Frank Zappa's Zappa In New York but it is on vinyl. T's & Beer is one of my favorite songs on that album.Admin wrote:Its a little late but about 2 1/2 weeks ago, I went to a city-wide antique sale/flea market in Oronoco, MN. Good score on that GFR 8 track. Closer to home is a masterpiece. Sad to say they don't make music like that anymore.

If you won't miss it, I wouldn't mind placing it on the shelf with the rest of my old electrical crap. Are you an electrician?crankbndr wrote:Many years ago I worked on a two story house built in the 30s that had knob and tube wiring, it had two bare wires strung down the attic and the drops for the rooms came off them down through the walls using the tubes and knobs. I'll watch that eBay lot with the tires, thanks.

Paid 50¢ each. Don't find them too often since they are usually left in place when a house is rewired.

I still haven't gotten around to transferring this tape. I'll try to do it this weekend. If you don't remember, the 8-track of Pink Floyd Animals was the only format to include a special guitar solo by Snowy White. Both the Wollensak 8055 and 8075A (the decks with the best sounding preamp) could use a new belt as they do slip on occasion. The 8055 still has its original belt (40 year old belt) and I put a new belt in the 8075A but it was always a little loose so I need to order a slightly smaller one. I play them both regularly and they both sound fine but when it comes to recording something to a CD, I like it to be as perfect as possible and keep W&F to a minimum.

Do you want the Grand Funk tape too? That is, if it doesn't sound like crap (I haven't fixed and play-tested it yet).jsesere wrote:Good idea.

I have all the Funk I need. It covers the years adequately.

While uploading that previous picture. I stumbled across this ad for the Dune Buggy on my desktop. I don't remember where I got it from though, maybe an eBay listing?
