I'm going to a 1/2A fun-fly tomorrow in Huntersville, NC. That's where my October contest will be so I can get familiar with the lay of the land and people. They will give out a couple of awards for best plane, best flight, etc. Mine won't win any beauty contests, but maybe I can get in a good flight. The wind is forecast to be steady 11mph and clear, low 80s.

The contest CD for the October contest told me to bring the big one too, he wants to work on my flying and trim. I spent the last couple of days tuning up my babies, the two Streaks and Li'l Satan. I'll probably leave the Kom-Bat and PT-19 at home. I'll take pictures and see y'all tomorrow night.

Rusty

I'm jealous Rusty!!! The weather up here in RI is getting nippy... This weekends forecast is nice "seasonal" mid-60's and clear. Put it this way; "we're closing the pool"Sad  There have been some nights where it has dipped into the mid (not high..) 40's... but that's New England for ya'

Have fun... take pictures and personally; I'd take the "Kom-Bat" and PT-19 along, if their flyable... but that's just me...Laughing

I bet folks would enjoy the PT-19. Even though it doesn't stunt worth a darn. Kind of a reminisce kind of thing.

I'll be competing at the Carolina Criterium, October 19 and 20. I'll fly beginner, I believe on Sunday the 20th. Is that the one you're talking about? My friend Wayne is from that club, Metrolina Control Lone Association. And Will Davis is the one who wants to help me with my Shoestring tomorrow. He made me a nice set of lines. I have heard some familiar other names from Wayne that I recognize from the SH forum.

Rusty, this month and next month seems to have one contest after another for us up here in the north. My focus has been just to stick with one particular event although I already went in different directions. I will see Dan this weekend and find out more. If you do happen to both attend on the same date, it would be great for you to meet him. Ken

Ken, which Dan are you referring to?

Today was a great experience. It was the first time I've been in the same place with more than one other control liner. I saw combat planes, scale planes, self designs, speed planes... flown by women too, all kinds of planes. It was billed as a 1/2A event but lots of big stunters showed up too, including my comparatively diminutive Shoestring. Before the club meeting, lots of little ones were in the air, hoping for an award for best flight, best plane in several categories, etc.

I took the Li'l Satan and both Streaks. My signature plane today was the Norvel Streak which I had been fixing up for 3 days. To qualify for any award, it had to fly. I took it up to the grass field since it wasn't as busy as the paved circles. I ripped off a masterpiece of a circle burner. I'd forgotten what a dream that plane is to fly. I did every stunt I knew I could pull off cleanly, including vertical 8, horizontals, inverted, and my wingovers pulled out flat every time. I had planned it out while I should have been sleeping last night. It was one of my best performances ever. My mistake was flying on a circle that no one much was watching. So when the judging was done by applause volume it sounded the same to me, but i was edged out by the guy that won best in show with a bi-plane flat lapper. It was a nice plane, but he didn't do squat for stunts. Oh well, I clapped for him too, so that was fine. I would really have loved to bring my first plaque home though.

I arrived early, so before the crowd came I got a few Shoestring flights in on the paved circle. My first time over a hard surface, but all went well. Will Davs, Waynes good friend was itching to help me and insisted I take off my favorite prop and use his APC 9x4. So I was back to flying at a hundred miles per hour and flew a stunt here and an abort there. I did get some of the roundest loops I've ever done and after a couple of tries one of my better horizontal 8s. I flew the full pattern minus an abort here and there a few times. Surprisingly the pavement didn't intimidate me. I think I'm past splatting it.

After the club meeting and awards, I flew a few more flights. I said, "Will I have a prop I know will pull it slower," but he insisted his APC was the best one, so I continued with it... at a hundred miles an hour, and managed one full pattern with no aborts out of about four more tries. I am actually learning to like the wind. Weather dot com said it was 11 mph. I think the overheads were the only part where it bothered me, and never did get a pretty one in. But by late afternoon I decided I was tired enough to quit while I was ahead.

This week I'll go out to the fort and use any damn prop I want, and see what I can really do. I'm convinced I need to get lower nitro fuel, maybe 5 or 10%. The 15% is just too hot for stunt flying. I would really like to get closer to 5 second laps so I can make adjustments before it's way too late. Watching those other guys fly makes it look so easy. But they all fly much slower. So I still have props, fuel, venturi restriction and head gaskets to try. But aside fro all that, I think my skills are there now.

There's more to the story, but I'm tired, so whatever else I think of, I'll post tomorrow. Will took lots of pictures so I'll post them too. Here are a few I took:

Great pictures Rusty, I am amazed that there are so many slab wingers in there. I did see a couple Baby Clowns and a Brodak Cosmic Wind.

Glad you had a good day. You will get that SS sorted eventually. Hopefully sooner than later.

There were a couple of nice Baby Rings and Clowns too. Not everyone put their planes in the group for the photo. That must've been about half of the planes there. I wanted to see the Hyper Viper fly, but it never did. Some people sure have a lot of planes.

Rusty, I can say with almost 100% certainty that the engine needs a additional head gasket or two. Seeing that you tried various props and the engine is running as fast as it is, I wouldn't hesitate to fly with longer lines. Hasn't anyone else suggested this? I would go out to 63' center of eyelet to center of eyelet. Many times I suggested to fly these planes with 58' lines eyelet to eyelet. I wouldn't try and use hard to find or out of production props. Remember this, if you take a stock APC for example and cut the tips of and leave them square, you decrease the efficiency of the prop and you can also control the speed of the plane by doing this. We do it all the time using the APC 9x4's due to using them in combat. We can't exceed the 80mph mark and trimming the tips back 1/8" at a time until we reach the desired speed.  Personally, I would make a head gasket and try 5% fuel if anyone has it at the club. Mark also suggested using castor oil to control the engine from thermically advancing.

As for Dan, I was mentioning Dan from my club up north here. I talked to him today and he did say he will be attending Huntersville on the 20th. He said unfortunately no Dynajets but he will have quite a assortment of aircraft with him. BTW nice pic of you and the Streak. Great pictures, I really enjoyed looking at them. I saw some of these examples at Brodak's I believe. Ken

Hi Ken. The next time I go out to the shop I'm going to make a new head gasket. If it's thicker, I'll swap it out. If it's thinner I'll add it. I'm also going to order some 5% nitro. I tried some 10% today and could tell no difference from my 15%. I still haven't tried choking the venturi either. Right now I'm using 22% oil, 10% synthetic and 12% castor. Castor spiked Sig Champion.

So when you square off the APCs it makes a speed difference, I'll do that. It was a 9x4 if I didn't mention it above. When I shorten props on 1/2As it makes them faster. So after squaring the tips to slow it, are you saying to continue cutting it down in increments to slow the plane even more?

I raised the subject of longer lines today and all the opinions were that the Shoestring is too small to fly on more than 60'. I know opinions are a dime a dozen, but it did seem to make some sense. On the other hand, it's plenty tight on 60', so 63 isn't out of the question. It sure would be the easiest fix, especially since the engine is happy as hell while it's roaring around the circle. I don't get any slowing in loops unless I pull one too tight. I don't do that much any more.

Rusty

Hi Rusty,

I'd just add the new gasket to the one already there.
I'm with Ken, i guessing the plane is a little on the heavy side and might be happier on longer lines, i'd add the gasket and fly on 60' first and see what it does before going to 63'
Did you win those top flites props, i thought those might work pretty good and if they did you'd have a lifetime supply.

shoot me your address and i'll get these mailed to you asap, the rev-up might be to much, but i'll never use it.

No, man I was so disappointed, I've out sniped so many in the past but someone got the drop on me this time. One lone bid had raised it to $10.50 about 5 hours earlier, so with 15 seconds to go I submitted $17.50 figuring I'd beat anyone who had gone $15. But some lucky bum won it with $18. He must have submitted a $20 max. Thanks for the woodies. I have a couple of Top Flite Power Point 10x4s I might try Ken's trick of squaring off.

I also have a TF 10.5-4 cut down from 11, if you want that one I'll send it to you.
I'm on 60' lines now. I have an old set of 61's with crimped ends I used before I got my nice wrapped end set from a Huntersville friend. Waynes out of town this week, but I might stooge it Tuesday or Thursday with the new head gasket.

Now back to 1/2A day... Next time I'm bring home the plaque! Before I fly I just need to shout,
HEY, WATCH THIS!!! lol!  Nah, that couldn't be bad luck, could it?

The plaques were actually a half of a capital "A." The right half luckily, so no one would mistake it for an italicized "F."
Damn, I feel good this morning, not half as tired as when I go to a 4 hour session of stunt school with Wayne.

And remember Cribbs talking about how the New Mexico flyers drag the plane off and leave the lines out on the circle? These stunt guys do that too. They make sure they're tight and flat against the asphalt, and none got snagged. It worked fine Saturday. They said there had never been an incident. But Ron hasn't flown there yet. 1/2A Fun-Fly Huntersville, NC 9-28-2013 Tongue
Ron, maybe if you ever come to SC to work, we can drive up there and fly as guests. We'd certainly be welcome.

To be continued as bits of fun memories float to the top of the mud puddle.

On the SS, have you tried patches of mesh over the intake to tame the engine to the props you can get easily?

No, as I mentioned in the first paragraph in my reply to Ken, I still haven't tried that yet. I did try an air filter yesterday, but it wasn't restrictive enough.

The engine is really running away. Restricting or choking down the venturi is going to make the problem worse. Seeing that the engine is thermically advancing through the tank, you need more fuel not less air as the fuel is what keeps the engine cool. So you have to figure out why the advancing. It's either due to a restrictive exhaust, too small of a venturi, too large of a prop, overcowled engine and not enough air flow. We know your prop choices are good and in the range, If using the stock muffler, these can sometimes cause the same problem but if I recall you were having these issues without the muffler. The initial flights were misinterpreted due to some tank issues indicating a venturi size possibly too large. Air leaks can give false readings like a oversize venturi or tank leak. Your engine was quitting as soon as you launched which is typical of a oversize venturi. That problem has been resolved but the runaway problem hasn't. If your launching as rich as possible and your ending up with a screaming lean run which won't return to burbling rich in level flight, the engine is overheating. Choking the venturi down will trigger this problem even earlier in the flight. So now that many possibilities have been ruled out, I certainly agree as well as yourself a head gasket would help. I myself wouldn't hesitate to play around with the venturi either as I feel it maybe now a few thou undersized.  I have overdrilled some and when I went too far, I used various Bic pens and I cut them up into small bushings which wedged directly into the stack making them the proper size once again. The head gasket obviously would work well and I would find if a OS LA .25 or Fox .35 head gasket would fit unless you make your own. This is a simple test and easily reversed unlike drilling venturi's. Ken

I have a spare Fox .35 gasket. I,ll check the fit if I ever get home from my mother in law's house. Rolling Eyes

Rusty, the combat plane in front of your Li'l Satan and the other one, that looks like a scaled down Voodoo, doesn't it?

Events like that must be great fun. When I was at the model shop near Rouen to buy replacement props 2 weeks ago, I asked the man if he knew of other people that do C/L in the department of Seine Maritime. With a lot of question marks above his head he replied: "Oh, you can count those people one hand." - meaning none.

That might be a VooDoo, but I was thinking of a blood red colored one, darker than mine.

Control line is a much more inexpensive hobby than Remote Control, even considering RC ARFs. Is it more an XBox culture change than an issue of economics? The other day was crystal clear, 70F and I had to pry my 25 year old neighbor and his 6 y/o son away from their dark stuffy den playing Diablo( or something like that), to come sit on his porch and watch me fly my Baby Streak. Meanwhile he has a 1/2A P-51 wing half built since July and a Brodak MKII with one break-in run collecting dust in my shop. He bought those the day after he first watched me fly when we'd just met. There ain't a big enough Eye-Roll smiley to paste here. My son has thanked us several times for not letting him have a video game system when he was young. He's now 28 and a skilled gamer but also an avid outdoorsman and amateur athlete as well as a self-supporting scientist. I'm glad we stood our ground.

Diablo? Really?

Sheesh. Don't know what to say about that.

I received an NES when I was 14. It was fun for a while, but I had already been shaped in the land of reality so the fantasy life didn't have much lustre.
