Field Box plans
I would like to build my own field box for CL. I am looking for a simple box that will hold my fuel, props, line reels, handles etc.
I can come up with my own design, but wondered what's out there. A quick internet search came up with very little.

Global "Little pit Kit"
This is a nice little field box. I have one... it's buried in a closet, or I'd provide a pic. I "do" however have the original box/instructions handy. Panels are all of Mahogany plywood, which I chose to leave natural... sealing it with clear polyurethane. I also padded the cradle with 3/8"W. foam weather-strip tape... instead of what's shown.
EDIT: I searched the web, and couldn't find it anywhere. I bought it on sale for $9.95 back in 1993 at a local "Hobby Town"

Re: Field Box plans
That would be perfect Roddie. Is it big enough for .19-.35 sized items?
I see you highlighted the dimensions, but I am having a little trouble making them out. Thank you very much for posting that!

"Click to see full size" then hit "ctrl" and "=" to zoom in and ctrl- to zoom out, taking for granted
you're using a computer. Ctrl 0 to see original size.
Sorry if you knew that.

No worries Bob,
I use an Iphone, I did enlarge them like you mentioned, still a bit fuzzy although I think I can make it out.

Re: Field Box plans
any better? I could scan the pages later on if needed. This is a small flight caddy... approx. 12" x 12" square. As it states on the box; "Absolutely Perfect for 1/2A-.15 size models"... I guess it depends on what you usually take to the field, as for whether it would support your larger planes. Qt. sz. fuel bottles are the largest that will fit. The side bins with the sliding covers will hold lots of props... and up to 11" dia. They're shallow "enough" not to have to "dig" to find things... which can be good.

Re: Field Box plans
Much better thanks Roddie. Sorry if I pestered you.
I will need to carry a gallon can, so I can enlarge the dimensions to suit my needs if needed. Guess I need to buy some ply!

Re: Field Box plans
Hey Ron, no worries... glad to help. Here's an idea to try, without having to change dimensions. Cut another pc. of 1/4" plywood 5" x 24" and screw it to the bottom of the base. This will give you a 6" extended "floor/shelf" on either side. Pick a side for your gal. fuel jug and use bungees/hooks or lg. sz. (6-8") hose clamps to secure it. The other side's 5" x 6" floor-extension could be counterweighted by making a battery box... or a "bin" to hold your heavier items. The full-length dowel carry-handle will help with balancing too. You may want to brace the side "uprights" above the dowel holes, for the extra weight.Cribbs74 wrote:Much better thanks Roddie. Sorry if I pestered you.

Just make sure that whatever you propose, doesn't "interfere" with the slide-covers opening. A 1 gal. jug probably "will"... on whichever side you choose to mount it.
I dug mine out of the closet...

Here's a perspective with a round 1 gal. jug...

Note: The slide-cover "knobs" are glued-on. Any method of attaching them with a screw would require "notching-out" the end panels of the bins (top/center) for clearance to install the covers... My knobs are drilled and "pinned" into the cover "flush" on the bottom side with sm. dowels. Alternately, you could drill a "finger-hole" in the cover to slide it open/closed.
If I were to "scratch-build" this box... I would "hinge" the bin covers... it's less complicated, and you would have the freedom of expansion without concern for their sliding clearances.
Re: Field Box plans
Thanks for the pictures. Great minds think alike as I was planning on hinging those lids already!

If it were me, I'd hinge those lids higher up and angle them to fit more "stuff" in. You can't have a box to heavy. Just like the shop can never be built big enough.

Re: Field Box plans
You know what's cool Ron... when I slid open this cover,
I found bag of balsa parts I'd been missing. A 40+ year-old hinged stab./elev. w/horn, to a Jr. Flight streak... of which I have the fuse/fin and a wing... (some broken ribs from "hanger damage) It was partially built by my Uncle... and never covered/finished. Building/repairing it would raise my total to "2" Junior Flight Streaks in my squadron. I have 2 Fox .15's... but one of them needs a piston/liner. Fox doesn't make it any more... so best bet is to score a cheap ebay motor... to make one good one.
Also in the bag, was a "Warrior" rudder (needed for a retro-fit fin/rudder, to the .19-.35 "no-name" stunt job I have.) and some other wood parts; either "made to replace" or repair/re-glue, airplanes that are either "out-of-service" or not yet finished... even after 40 years. I try to keep w.i.p./repair parts together/organized... but somehow they get misplaced.
Thanks for helping me find them!

Glad you found those parts! What does that no name plane look like?
I stopped by Lowes after work.

Re: Field Box plans
It's an old "built from plans" .19-.35 engine-sized stunter... unique; in that it is a "built-up" profile fuse w/push-rod running inside. I was told by my Uncle (who built it) that it was called a "Topper"... but I've searched several O.T.S. plan archives, and haven't found anything by that name. I located a Warrior "fin" this evening, while re-uniting the "new-found" parts with another parts box. The Warrior fin/rudder looks like it could be "faired-in" to this model and look o.k.... What do you think?Cribbs74 wrote:Glad you found those parts! What does that no name plane look like?
The "Topper"?

The "new-found" Jr. Flight Streak tail-feathers and Warrior fin/rudder

Re: Field Box plans
It will look just fine. Especially since I have no idea what it is supposed to look like.
I am a member of several CL forums. A lot of those guys have been around a long time and have seen it all. With your permission I would like to post your picture on those sites and see if I can get you a definitive answer as to what it is. Let me know.

Re: Field Box plans
Cool! Is that luan plywood... or 1/4"? I see you have the hinges for the bin lids. I posted on your other thread about a "field case"... and pitched the use of 1/8" clear plexi-glass bin covers.Cribbs74 wrote:

Have you decided on a plan... or adaptation of a plan? I've been wanting to build one too... a little bigger, but not over-kill.
Here's the "tote" I use for my 1/2 A's... (well...used to use...) It's got a nice little latching drawer-storage underneath. Don't ask me where I got it... It's probably older than you are!

Re: Field Box plans
It's Birch ply. $4.38 a sheet. I plan on mimicking your box that you posted and making the side box tops angled per Duke's suggestion.
I'm not sure if I will build in the cradles, but I might.
That's a neat little 1/2A box you have there!

Re: Field Box plans
Absolutely Ron! I really want to know more about this model. Who designed it... what magazine it was featured in... reviews... My Uncle can't remember... and the plans are likely long gone. There had to have been a full-size plan for it available at one time, that he used to build it. Any help with info. would be greatly appreciated!Cribbs74 wrote:It will look just fine. Here's 3 more pics... Note the odd fuse-protrusion/block at the r/h wing t/e...?

Hi Roger,
Have a look at this page of Kirt's website, I think it's the one:
http://www.airplanesandrockets.com/airplanes/topper-article-plans-march-1962-american-modeler.htm

Kirt is a nice guy. You can always send him a mail for some info. He replies very quickly and can send you provide you with plans.
I think I saw these pictures of your plane before on RCG right? I hope you get it together again and get it flying.
Lieven

You probably saw those pics previously here on CEF.

I've never posted them anywhere else.
I will contact Kirt for info. on plan availability. I would really like to have a set.
Thanks again,

Re: Field Box plans
Yes Ron! The plan calls for 1/16" sheet-balsa wing-ribs with 1/16" x 1/4" cap-strips. Mine was built with 1/8" sheet-balsa ribs, without cap-strips. My Uncle (the builder) was known for building his ukie's "quick" and flying them as soon as a few coats of clear-dope had dried! No doubt he deviated from the plan to get it built quickly.Cribbs74 wrote:Some small variations, but it looks the same to me. I think we have a winner!
Thanks Ron... to both; "you" and Lieven. If it wasn't for this thread; I may have never solved the mystery!

At least I now have a picture of the plan, to scale-up a more accurate fin/rudder. It would be a "gamble" as to the integrity of the in-accessible bell-crank mount after 45 years...
How's the "FIELD-BOX" coming along?" Back when I built the "Little Pit Kit", I drew a full-size plan. I just found it... here are pics.
