Re: free flight models
I know where some free plans are, but not kits for sale.
Free login required, additional free login for the plan gallery.
http://www.hippocketaeronautics.com/
no login required
http://www.outerzone.co.uk/
Most office type stores can print these out as "posters" but some are too wide and they can ship out to have printed. It is pretty reasonable in cost too.

Here's a Bird of Time kit:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXYXJ8&P=7
Most Cox engines will haul it as high as you want to go. Our member Kim has a BOT that has recorded some marvelous flights with video cameras attached. Click the Google button under the forum search box and type BOT, B.O.T. or Bird of Time and you'll find some of his flights.

Re: free flight models
Having built serval over the years I'm not too pleased will Guillow's models. The price may be "right" but there are other items lacking specifically the durability of the finished model powered by angine.
Made basically of "sticks and paper", the simply aren't rugged enough to hold up when in any way to the rigors of being roughly handled or surving all but the lightest "crashes". This should concern "beginner" pilots. (Yes you WILL crash guaranteed). A slab-wing profile is far easier than a Guillow's
Better a "slab-wing" of profile design and there are whole bunch available at nominal prices at or lower than that of Guillows.
EDIT:Try a Brodak "American Boy". Opps! That's not a free-flight.

Re: free flight models
BMJR Models sells several classes of Free Flight Models. I bought a Joe Wagner "Dakota" kit from them (via Ebay) and it is fantastic. It is laser-cut with a complete plan sheet and covering tissue included.
http://www.bmjrmodels.com/
You might also try Swap-Meets if any are held in your area. I got this Midwest "Sniffer", pre-built and flight-trimmed, with Trexler Tires and a Cox .020 for 40 bucks at a Swap Meet near St. Louis.

Hope this helps!
Also, Good Luck, and Welcome to the Forum !!!!!!
Kim
Edit: Sorry...I missed stevej's listing of BMJR in his post !

Guillows Super Cub Free Flight
I built one of these (Guillows Super Cub 24" span) in the 1970's powered with the Pee Wee 0.020. It flew like a bird!
I would use a 5 x 3 prop and about 0.4cc of fuel to get about a 30 second engine run.
The model was covered in a silk like nylon and Aerogloss dope. I would typically get between 6 and 10 flights before cracking the wing to fuselage joint. I would inject Ambroid into the broken section and be good to fly the next day.
I have since purchased the same kit, (now apparently laser cut) and hope to put a lightweight radio into it. I even found a Pee Wee with a factory installed exhaust throttle that I could use in a pinch.
