Two old retired guys killing time

Two old retired guys killing time
Had some good flying lately. Last Thursday I got a good lesson on flying in a stiff breeze, about 14mph with gusts. Saturday at Watts house where we had our club meeting, and today another seriously gusty day with funny winds that would try to slap a plane out of the air doing nothing more than flat laps. I almost pancaked it halfway around my takeoff lap.
Here's Wayne and me in front of our fleet Thursday. We had to hold our hats to keep them on.

My ol' beater. She's a tough one.

Here's today's fleet. Wayne brought his new eSmoothie, but wouldn't fly it in the wind.

Take a look at my Skyray. I should have followed his wise lead. I pulled out a little low on the second loop of a H8. I think it would have cleared the ground any other day, but it clipped one blade off the prop and kept flying with loose lines, shaking like crazy, then hit the ground again and luckily the engine quit when the other blade broke off. Got a crack in the outboard center sheeting that should be easy to fix. And the stab broke where it had been repaired before I got the plane. Nothing else seems broken, so an hour's work and she'll be airworthy again.

Look at Wayne's dummy engine in the Smoothie. It's a film canister.

Rusty,
You should get some clear ultracote to patch that hole so she really looks like a beater!

glad that's all that got broken and no one got hurt, I was thinking of getting in the air this past weekend but I missed sat. being the prime day and the way my weekend was going I decided it wouldn't be worth it at this time.

Lol, you guys are funny. JP that's the greatest idea ever. I wish I could buy a roll of clearjust for the hell of it, I'd do it.

Re: Two old retired guys killing time
I had my first dose of windy flying in Kansas and my second dose in Clovis NM.
It sure can be tricky! The guys that fly in it a lot probably have an advantage over those who do not.
Looks like a fun day and an easy fix. Thanks for the writeup and pictures!
P.S. I too like the clear wing idea.

Thats a beautiful Smoothie but I got a chuckle out of the dummy engine, kinda like putting fake balls on a neutered dog.

I think its kinda neat! But if you think about it, the one technology (35mm film) obsolete and what it suppose to be (glo engine) is also on the decline!
Re: Two old retired guys killing time
I can only think of two or three times that I haven't flown in wind in 3 years of flying here in Albuquerque. The guy that taught me to fly basically told me that if you wait for a calm day you will never fly. When we do get a calm day it's a real treat. Rusty, I love your Skyray. I'm getting ready to build two of them for stunt trainers.

Re: Two old retired guys killing time
Hi Jim, thanks, though not a lot of style in a stock Ray. Mine looks better with the added flaps and wingtips. I think the set of full balsa ribs is part of why it's still in one piece. I highly recommend that mod. I'm starting my new one in a couple of days, and already bought the 3/32" balsa for the ribs and enlarged stab. I'm going to stylize it even more, maybe make it look Streakish, sort of bird-like, I haven't decided yet.
As far as wind, it's good experience for me since they don't stop contests if it's windy. I'm disappointed in hitting the ground with it. I've been flying this plane for months without plowing it until yesterday. Live and learn.
