Got these for a good price some time ago.
The goal is to get the bee back running (not a dificult task) and to find out what model this one was.
Once that is known recreate the wing tail to rebuild this model.

The "fly 'em" spit was also included but outside of my collection interest.
It had corrosion damage included a broken off needle besides the missing / damaged tail parts
If someone is looking for parts that might still be ok then send me a pm.

The profile model looks like "The Jug"...a P-47 Thunderbolt.

new project, second hand profile controll line model and engine (plus a spit) Empty any idea if there is a plan of it?

Post  cmulder Sun Jan 08, 2023 4:36 pm

It looks to be a scratch build model so it might not even have a plan but if there is one to follow that would make things a bit easier.

I would agree with Kim. P-47. Plans/examples easy to find.

The Testor's Spitfire a doable challenge and worth the effort. Wing does not look too bad, usually these are quite mishapen. Do it and and let us know.

Certainly appears to be a Sterling P-47 beginners kit. It's actually a pretty good flyer for a slab. Key is to remove the gear.

new project, second hand profile controll line model and engine (plus a spit) Dscn3117 I flew this thing to death as all the epoxy repairs show here. This plane is how I learned to fly 1/2A inverted. I built this 42 years ago.

Hey @Ken Cook that makes me laugh a bit as people have been telling me for some time (not on CEF) you cannot learn to fly inverted using half-A to start with, and you cannot learn to fly inverted with slab wing profile, and even worse is to try and learn with a Half-A slab wing profile. I have just recently be learning again to fly inverted and on a slab wing profile half-A and I dont understand why people say this stuff. Ill give it that it might be easier on a really nice expensive well built and designed model with say a .35, proper fuse, ribbed wings etc. and someone has trimmed it and set it up and you have 60 ft lines and dead calm. Maybe thats what they mean. It might be a tad harder to learn on half-A but at least whilst learning and crashing its not costing a lot of money and not a lot of time is needed to repair the planes either. And on a half-A slab wing profile its a lot easier to just go for it as the consequences of getting it wrong are so much less.

I like the look of the plane. Might build one and give it a spin. Looks like a bit of an aerofoyle has been sanded into the wing.

I would've saved myself a lot of heartache if I just went with the larger to learn. It's not exactly easy to learn via 1/2A's. Beginner Sterling kits back when I was buying them was under $7. Nowadays, I've seen that Sterling Thunderbolt sell for $70. It's over the top out of control. The speed, twitchiness, and uncontrolled movements of a 1/2A makes it difficult to learn. During the inside loops, I noticed if I applied down elevator on the downside of the leg the plane would fly out inverted. The problem with doing that is that I would continue applying down elevator until the plane would come back around. Doing so with a reed engine regardless of tank venting style would almost result in the engine lacking power and or quitting. If someone coached me to take the plane high and tuck it under would've seriously expedited my learning experience saving many planes.

Ok, makes sense. Thumbs Up I know you have lots of experience. I can see where you are coming from with the half-A being harder to fly. Maybe its not as hard for me as an absolute Newbie, as I at least flew for 5 or so years in my youth. Half-A and .15 enya on combat wings. The way you describe going inverted is exactly what I do. lol! Though I must say I have not had the power problem etc. Maybe an external tank is different I dont know. But my reed based engines have run hard through a horizontal eight and havent seemed to have any issues. Also the engines I am using are just built engines with great compression and great suction, be interesting to see if as the engines age, if they start doing as you have experienced. I am also using a TD on the same plane design which works well also.

I will try taking it high and tucking it under and see how that goes. Getting there from a wingover also seems to be a good way to get there. All of them are good to learn really. Thats the thing I guess. Learn one then learn the next, and different little skills and experiences come as you go along. For the taking it high and tucking it under, I will find an old, war weary jigger for the first few goes. Tucking it under makes me very nervous as to sticking it into the ground. Lol.

Yes, having a good coach would be helpful, but that cannot always be. But, I pick up things from the forum instead Thumbs Up and Im going to give it a go.

new project, second hand profile controll line model and engine (plus a spit) Empty wing shape

Post  cmulder Mon Jan 09, 2023 5:10 pm

The cutout in the fuse shows the wing chord so if i know the wingspan (metric please;) and the outline shape (picture i could scale up) and the tailfin shape then that should be enough to recreate the missing parts.
Have half of the horizontal tail so just mirroring that should be all info i need for that .
Oh and where to place the belcrank mount screw and leadout guide holes.

thanks Smile

Ken,
Since your survivor is still in one piece,.can you trace the parts out for quick reference/reproduction? I don't think Sterling will mind. Laughing

I'm sure cmulder could use them.

If you print this on a4 then you should have the exact outline of the parts.
The tail half needs to be mirrored for the complete tail

I'm not as adapted to the computer as most are on here. I could probably copy one side of the wing on a piece of paper. There's really not much to this. Straight leading edge, elliptical trailing edge. If that's what you would want me to do, I think I could manage that.

We used to use French curves to make those pretty elliptical edges in pencil. I still have a set somewhere including a few that belonged to my father.
