I switched to a new fuel today...
I've been using Glowplugboy with 17% castor and no synthetic. Runs fine, no problems as far as I can tell. But since I now have a couple of engines that turn faster than my reedies I figured I'd try something with 20% oil. That would be Sig Champion 25% nitro and 20% oil, half castor/half Klotz(whatever that is). The first thing I thought when I took the cap off is, this smells more like the old Cox Red can. I think it had Klotz too, so maybe that explains the resemblance.
I tried it first in my TD which was on a plane with my new bladder tank. I had to screw with it for a while getting it cranked, and it ran fast and steady as usual. By the time I was through me and the plane were covered with the slickest coating of oil I've ever seen. Usually I clean myself up with a rag soaked in alcohol, but I had to go in the house and wash it off. I was covered with it, even my face where the engine had spit it all over me. I couldn't see out of my glasses.
I went back out to try and get one of my Black Widows running right so I would have at least one flyable plane. Put it back together on the Li'l Satan and cranked it up and it ran great on the Sig. But after 3 test runs it had so much oil on it I could hardly hold it. I mean dripping. Again I had to come inside and wash off. I had it all over my glasses too. That's got to be good for the engines, but man, what a mess. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining, just surprised. I'm curious if anyone has thought the same thing about Sig. Is it the synthetic oil causing this. Cox fuel never make such a mess.
Just curious

Yah, it's pretty slimey stuff, that 2% oil makes a big difference. A bit to much lubricant? maybe, but your engines will last. I have some full gallons of ODonnell 30% truck race fuel, that is 8% synthetic only. Going to whip up some 17-18% lube in that and give it a shot. Maybe try a quart mix and see. I have some Klotz Benol castor from the MX Shop.

Rusty, you can be called a true "greaser" now.
I've mixed bottles of fuel for myself and 20% starts to make you wonder how the dang thing can run with that much oil. The other ingredients you add make you feel your just adding it to get it to draw into the motor.
Klotz being synthetic almost needs petrolium to be wiped clean.

I have a note on my desk right now to check into the O'Donnell 30/8 fuel and see if they will tell me what their lube is. I want to know if the Klotz Original Techniplate will be compatible with their fuel. I thought of doing the same thing, but putting together a lubricant package that's high in synthetic composition.
I'll be interested to hear how your testing works out.

Hey Andrew! Getting "slimed" can be funny!

They won't, I tried when I was racing, but you might have better luck. "proprietary info" stuff form ODonnell. They do say 8% syn on there website. It used to be a 80/20 castor/syn blend, but years ago they just went to a 8% and added a bunch of anti-foam. It was the best fuel when I was racing, ran cool, tuned easy. I will say that all my motors got switched out to ceramic engine bearings and they did just fine with just 8% syn and a tight needle. A smart fuel with the opaque jugs and very little color to the fuel, just a hint of a amber color, almost entirely clear fuel. All the others had loads of glowplug killing dye and clear jugs. I was buying ODonnell 8 gallons at a time.

Speaking of dye, was Cox fuel as pink as Glowplugboy and Sig? I guess it makes it easier to see in the lines, I just don't remember so much pinkness.

To prevent castor accumulation on my BW planes I use an exhaust deflector from Bernie. It helps reduce the slime but doesn't eliminate it entirely.

Rusty ---
The color in Glowplugboy and SIG fuels comes from the Klotz lubes -- even their castor oil has a red coloration. COX fuel probably used straight castor with a slight straw color.
Re: I switched to a new fuel today...
The straw color sounds right. Actually Gpboy has only 17% castor and no synthetic. I can't imagine why he stopped at 17% castor and 24% nitromethane when everyone says they need 20% oil. I thought of e-mailing him and letting him know why I didn't buy his again. I was concerned about using it in my TD at the higher revs. He seems like a pretty good fellow. But Sig is a little less expensive too.
I feel like i need a shower after using the Sig.
