1/2A RC model weight and covering problem.
Hi all,
I'm going to build Rc models for 049 engine or pee wee.
I choose some nice old plan and before I start to build, most of members in other forums suggest that old model plans are actually under powered, and for sport flying, 049 models should not exceed 400g total weight, and 150g for Pee Wee.
That's make me worry.
In fact, I already built Skampy for my RC pee wee, but I haven't cover it yet. No dope and tissue in my country. Dope can't be ship from overseas. Lightweight covering film also not available here. I checked towerhobbies for light weight covering film, price sounds reasonable abut shipping cost to our country cost me USD68, which is too expensive for me.
My question is , do I need to follow the suggestion of 400g and 150g limit for sport models? Or just follow the old article's suggested weight?
I ordered Jap tissue but no dope, ( how I wish Bernie can sell dope in small can, I've heard that small can of liquid can be ship by airmail without problem ) I've heard about diluted PVA but I don't think its fuel proof . Normal monokote film will add quite a lot of weight, although it works for me on my 049 powered glider, but never try on pee wee model. Any suggestion please ?

I built this PeeWee .020 powered plane and covered it with Monokote. Flew pretty good. Total weight was 2.25oz or 64gm.

It depends on the plane style a lot but 400g and 150g are good recommendations for a modern sports plane with a throttle. You will then have a power to weight ratio of about one. For level flight you can certainly manage with a much lower power to weight ratio. So if you fly without a throttle the weights can be higher, and if the wing area is large the weights can be higher too.
Don't diss what people did in the past, they did some great stuff considering what was available at the time. Nowadays with modern radios, anyone can build a model that is light enough and has full house controls...

A bee engine will pull a 2m glider aloft fine. With RC wing loading is more important than all up weight, although the style of performance will change.

Hi Phil,
I'm flying a 1.7m glider with baby bee Texaco style without problem. I think I will try monokote on my skampy and see what's the all up weight, the modern receiver/ battery/ servo are much lighter than early day, and should be compensate the weight I think.
