Kit bashed with Golden Bees

I had a lot of balsa left over from several old builds so I decided I had to do something with the pile.

With nothing in my head except vacant space and "something with two engines" in mind I came up with this rather weird design.

Excuse the photos, pre digital 35's and faded but you can get the idea. I think it was my inspiration for the P-38 that I posted about in my "New guy checking in" thread.

Looked a little like Snoopy the dog so that's what I named it after painting it's nose black. Flew like a dog too, gives new meaning to the word "mush" as it's plows along in the air.

I don't know what happened to it. Crashed, maybe. But more likely just tossed after salvaging the GB's but I wish I still had it.

I hope this is the correct forum to post this, if not I hope someone will correct me...

I like the old pictures! Thanks for posting. The post could go here as it's Cox related, but it could also go in Models and Modelling.

I'll move it for you so it doesn't get lost.

The "sound" of multi's get's my attention.. whether it's models or full-scale! I still have an old slab-wing ukie that I designed years ago, that was a bit large for the single reedie that I had on it. (The wing is 174 sq.'s Shocked ... one of my 1st designs) so I built engine mounts for the wing.. and put 3 Bee engines on it. I think it was GB's on the wing and a Babe on the nose (which got cranked last, because of its smaller tank) It flew much better.. and the CG was actually unaffected.

Here's what's left of it. (note the nice sharp edges of the leading-edges on the wing and stab.. lol! ) The nose "was" blunt before.. and had an engine mount on it.

"getback" If I ever get this Nieuport 28 finished I will be flying it.

I finished another 28 many years ago and just for fun I’m doing another as I had a spare engine.

These series 21 McCoys seem to gather a lot of grief but the one on my original 28 has been great starting easy and pulling hard. Lot’s of power there to pull this dragging bi-plane around.

Would love to had heard those three engines in sync roddie. Must have been impressive.

Thanks all for your responses.

Hey RSV, I think that some of the heavier (older) engines are well suited for the "golden-age" flying scale models. These models are almost always tail-heavy because of their short-noses which mostly housed rotary/radial engines in their full-scale representations. I love that Nieuport 28!!!

I have two McCoy "red-head" glow engines. A .19 (was on my dad's gorgeous "Sterling" Waco Cabin..) and a .35 which I bought second-hand 25 years ago. I also have an .098

I had a .19 Red Head once, if I dig deep enough I might find it.

Kind of a wierd routing for the fuel line, see picture, but it never affected performance. I brought the gas tank feed line in on the other side on the "new" 28 resulting in a much shorter line. I hope that it runs as well. Should.

As mentioned the plane flies great. Loops no problem but I don't have the courage to try inverted. It's a great kit, goes together easy and strong. Lots and lots of parts. Hardest part was constructing the exhaust manifold to vent it outside the cowl.

Nope, it's been "resting" for about 20 years now. Pretty shop worn, it will have to be re-silked before I try it again. I'm sure the "new" 28 will see air first though.

I'm debating how to cover the new 28. Monocoat is out, some sort of silkspan or fabric I guess, but "dope" is so hard to come by. I used to get the small bottles to paint colors red/blue/white on the vertical stab but our local HS's don't carry it.

Off to the locals this morning, sheet balsa, lead-out wires, eyelets, control arms and other stuff are on the list. Sad part is.....I used to have all of that until I sold/gave away it all.

What goes around comes around... Smile
