This weekend and until Tuesday, there is a parachute club happening at the Le Havre airport. To take people up in the sky, a 1956 Nord 2501, also known as Noratlas, flew over from its Marseille base. I didn't know al this until I saw the plane circling above my house. From the ground, it just looks like a Flying Boxcar. The third time I saw it, it was lowering the landing gear. I jumped in my car to take some pictures at the airport.

This particular plane dates from 1956. It took part in the raid at Port Saïd on 5 November 1956 and is now the only flying example left. The palne is powered by 2 Bristol Hercules engines built Under license by SNECMA, ex Gnome et Rhône.

Thanks Lieven, I saw these airplanes several times over my head...

Do you know the 2504 ? only one built, with a Marboré jet engine at the wing tip.

Good show Lieven,

While serving with the USAF in a Matador missile outfit in Germany, we spent a few months at Wheelus AFB near Tripoli test firing missiles over the Sahara range in Libya. We stopped somewhere in France (Marseille?) to refuel on the flight from Germany to Tripoli, in the late 50's. Our transport was a Fairchild C-119 Boxcar, and I was quite surprised to see an aircraft very similar to our's parked on the ramp. I'm pretty sure it was a Noratlas though we didn't know the name back then.

We refueled somewhere else on the return leg from Wheelus about three months later, and I never saw another Nord until now.

Thanks for the memories!

Bill
