but I'm just drawn to these Sterling Nieuport 28 kits. I have four already and this one the way. It's a complete kit with the decals intact, a rarity.

It's not a easy build and the instructions can be a little vague and tedious but fun just the same.

Anyone else have a particular model that you like to build, or is variety the spice of life?

I really wanted those decals........ Very Happy

Think my version of this would be not so much as building repeated models of the same plane as refusing to turn loose of an original plane, rebuilding and REBUILDING it way past the point where other modelers would have committed it to a Viking Funeral.

My Sig Kadet MkI "Mud Dabber"is the most glaring example.  Built in 1984 to participate in a cross-country fund-raiser for United Way, busted-up in an ill-conceived slow turn down low, rebuilt and hard-flown for a decade, smashed by a falling toolbox, rebuilt "better" as a Tail Dragger, getting the crap flown out of it some more, often riding the ragged edge of a stall as it slow-cruised around the field at walking speed, getting destroyed again trying to tow a glider, and now getting it's third major rebuild because my buddy Vince bought a Senorita Kit he's gonna name Mud Dabber II (I'd take him to court, but I've always heard that you can't copyright a title)...durn friends...

Bipes and tripes! I just love the look of multiple wings! I never cared much for the Beech Staggerwing.. that is; until I saw Jim Roselle's gorgeous 1/2A Speed model!

The most difficult "kit" I've been working on is the little Sterling DR1. (kit E2.. started 25 years ago.. and still not finished)

I scratch-built a little profile slab-wing bipe, using the DR1's mid and top wing and tail-feathers as templates.

and here's my custom triplane.. my second experiment with framed-slab construction.

These were some of favorite models to build.

Love that Dabber Kim, all of the stuff and non of the fluff.  Even I remember the Sig Kadet.  A model with a long and envolved history!!!!

And Eric, I can find all kinds of 1/32" and up decals, but I need about maybe 1/12" for this 33 inch Nieuport.  I think when and if I build another I will just cover it with flat gray monocoat find some German Crosses and represent it as a captured aircraft sort of a knoodlesaufferburg.

and....roddies building Tripes while I'm worring about Bipes.  But at least I have only been working on mine for less than a year.  Very Happy Very Happy   Love that DR1 and very Spaddish scratch built.

I'm not in love with my current Nieuport.  The basic structure is fine but I have lost my touch with silkspan.  After a spritz of water with a hint of wetting agent and a coat of Aero gloss clear it's not tightening up as well as previous efforts.

There's a great vid on silkspan covering tips. I think you can find it by searching here. http://www.airplanesandrockets.com/resources/about-airplane-and-rockets-disclaimer.htm

That little custom bipe was loads of fun! It was just a roundy-rounder.. but it towed birthday-banners.. busted balloons.. and is the only model that I have video of me flying. It's on VHS media from back in 1993. I have a DVD-VHS-DVD transfer deck.. so I should see if I can convert and upload the vid to youtube.  Shh

Are you thinning your dope and if so how much are you thinning it? However, I wouldn't hesitate to put the sikspan on very wet. When I do full body planes with several compound curves, I precut all my material. Keep a bowl of water next to you and completely dunk the silkspan. Take it out of the bowl and unfold it and lay it on your shirt or sleeve. While I'm adjusting the prior piece and doping the sopping wet piece is on my chest or shirt sleeve waiting to go on next. Your clothes will take the excess water away without drying it all up. Just brush the clear right over the wet silkspan. This will initially look all milky white. After some needed coats though the milkiness goes away. I would consider a hair dryer to expedite silkspan shrinkage. If that still doesn't work switch to Sig Supercoat. It will shrink then. Ken

Thanks for the pointers.

I cut my silkspan to fit then put it on dry and dot one side with CA at critical points, then pull it tight and dot the other side. Then I paint the balsa attachment points then spray with water, let dry then coat the whole thing with unthinned clear.

I never thought about putting it on wet, probably worried about the wet span not accepting glue.

Used this procedure for many models with good results. But this one is a mess.

I should've also mentioned working the dope through the silkspan with your finger is very important. Key is having enough dope on the framework. Usually at that point even silkspan placed on dry works if you place it on the framework and just brush thinner on it while adjusting it. obviously getting the silkspan on the framework as wrinkle free as possible is always best.
