Cox Engine of The Month
queen bee 074

queen bee 074
I was curious if a 5x3 prop would be ok to run on a queen bee. The instructions don't give the max redline rpms for the engine and a 6x3 is the smallest prop it gives rpm range on. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: queen bee 074
I wouldn't go less than an 6x3, the Queen Bee's crank is not the strongest of the cox engines IMO I've seen them break. It tacks around 16,500 rpm with a 6x4 at least mine did at the time i checked it so a 6x3 may get you around 17 or 18k. A 5x3 may red line it. (Bandit)

Re: queen bee 074
I have compared the Queen Bee piston rod vs the 09's
It is a robust engine and can handle some load.
I have ran the QB over 24k rpm in a outrigger hydro race boat
In the air I have found the results of Peter Chinn recommendation of a 6x3 prop makes good use of the engines power curve his recommendations where based on the props of that time.
Today we have the APC 5.75 x 3 gives more rpm but the engine could be loaded more.
Highly recommend the Master Airscrew 5.5 x 4 this prop provides good thrust but most of all makes use of the QB rpm and will allow a sport plane to fly with good authority on breezy days.
You can run a 5x4 all day long on this engine you won't see much benefit of a 5x3 lower pitch can't make up for less thrust from a 5in dia prop.
Here are some of my pics for comparisons and should help steer you in the direction you choose.
Note the weight diffrence and pressure tap on the muffler both make a big diffrence in performance!

Thank you all so much for all your knowledge and insight on the queen bee! I'll keep you all posted but it seems like I have several projects going on and it starts with me restoring a cox engine then I somehow end up restoring another then I have a drawer full of engines!
