Wow, is right...I've missed a few over the years as well. The early 60's Wen-Mac version with twin engines would bring $800-$1200 all day long. These are not as collectable even though there not as common, don't know if its because they're newer, only one real engine, it's a Testors or that most collectors were grown up (chronologically) by the late sixties.

Yesterday I went to look at this listing and noticed an auction listing for the Starfighter, the last Comet model I "need" for collection.

even with the wrong prop (F-51) on it, it still brought good money, more then I tried to Snipe it for.

Hi Mark, I wasn't sure if your initial response was "Wow, that a really good deal" or "Wow, way overpriced." I think the latter. I thought for that money that P-38 should be in better condition or at least come with a box, or be a Cox product.

I'm sure that most here are familar with this site:

http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_modeldatabase.htm

I thought for a moment that I would like to collect Cox model planes and maybe cars. But after looking at the pure volume of plastic models that Cox built over the years I just gave up, I could never collect them all. I think I will be satisfied with my two F4U Cosairs.

If you have in fact all of the Comet models save the Starfighter you have my admiration. Hand Shake How about the rest of them?

Testors P-38 - $217.50 Wow Empty Re: Testors P-38 - $217.50 Wow

The Testors version of the P-38, depending on condition (is the cheesy chrome plating coming off?) should bring $150-$225 appx.

The Comet series of plastic "RTF" planes were only made for a few years (late fifties to early sixties) and were not competitive with Cox in marketing/performance or Wen-Mac/Testors in cost/volume. Made in Chicago, the early versions used Herkimer O.K. Cubs, later a .07 designed by Fox, and later (insert long story here) back to O.K. with a reed valve .060
As far as the different models and the different versions of those models, Comet only made a few: Sabre, P-51, P-40, Tri-Pacer, Snark (my favorite), Regulas and Nightfighter.

AT-6 Texan but advertised on ebay as a “Fighter plane model”. Fifty nine bucks BIN. I jumped on it before you guys got a chance.

I think I stated above that I wasn’t going to collect these. Your all a bad influence on me.

lol, hey that's no AT-6, it's a NAVY PLANE! ....just kidding, nice grab for 60 beans! Your SNJ, is probably early 60's (c. 1963) it's got the rubber tires w/ landing gears doors, "football" antenna and the new "Hot Shot" engine. You could peak at number on engine to get a better idea of year made. Keep an eye out (I will too) for the canopy, they come up often on eBay.

It's tough getting anything by you guys.

I remember walking by row upon row of these in Pensacola in 1956 as they were being phased out, only they were all yellow.  Pensacola was my first assignment after AN-P school in Norman Oklahoma.

Drove a 1951 Studebaker down from NH with my new wife and probably less than $150 in our pockets.

While looking I found this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1950S-WEN-MAC-P-38-LIGHTNING-GAS-POWERED-TETHER-LINE-AIRPLANE-NR-MINT-/231439852897?pt=Vintage_Antique_Toys_US&hash=item35e2e3e561

Ok, now I'm a believer, maybe $690 for the other P-38 wasn't to bad...... Embarassed

My best buddy in high school was stationed at nearby Foley field, he used to visit quite often. Lot's of Naval Aviation Cadets were trained at those fields.

I checked for canopys, all too large, but I'm still looking.

P.S.
If you like old airfields, this is really a neat web site.

That's it. Always referred to as Foley Field. I booked the site.

Loved the picture of the bent prop F4U and all the SNJ's. The SNB was the multi trainer I believe.

My buddy stationed there graduated from HS with my wife and me. Ted joined the Navy before me and was an Aviation Mechanic. I was a TD (Training Devices Man). We operated and maintained the Navy's flight simulators. I have even worked on the old Link Trainer (Blue Box).

TD's never saw sea duty, I spent twenty years in the Navy and never a day aboard a ship. There were only about 1300 of us in the entire Navy. After I retired they abolished the rate and contracted everything out.

I "flew" and instructed Naval Aviators and Reservists using the old 2F23 jet (F-80) simulator. Flight/navigation procedures, Omni, DME, and TACAN. Got thousands of hours flying, instructing, and maintaining that vacuum tube monster. A couple of tons of electronic computing power that today could put on a chip.

I also maintained Ball (wheel) Disk Integrators. Fun days of long ago.
