TeeDee 049 differences?

TeeDee 049 differences?
I am looking at buying an unused TeeDee 049, not sure when it's made, and I haven't seen it yet. The seller did not mention a box, so there probably isn't one. Are there any particular variants that should be avoided? And how can I identify them? After all, these were made for 35 years. I am guessing the one in question is from early '80s or later.

Re: TeeDee 049 differences?
The case is the only part that is not available. Telling the difference between the medallion and the TD is about as hard as it is. The TD has a rectangular milled intake in the crank, and the medallion a round drilled intake. Usually the plastic intake body is different with a 1 piece on the medallion, but these are easily and frequently changed around.
A medallion can be made into a TD easily, but the medallion crank is hard to get so it can be resold easily, but only goes for what a TD crank costs. Some people desire the better fuel draw and milder performance of the medallion.
There are some parts combinations for the TD and medallion that are less powerful, but, stock, none that are problematic.
Parts are available trough coxengines.ca and exmodelengines.com

You maybe particularly lucky to get a pre-Estes one (if it was made by Estes at all), having thin and stepped wall cylinder with a number 4 stamped under the exhaust port. These were made to very small tolerances, and more importantly, with tapered cylinder bore that helps retain excellent compression even in intense use year after year.

Re: TeeDee 049 differences?
Thanks guys. Just found out I can only click the thanks button once per thread, but I am equally thankful to boht of you and in advance to everyone who may add their info to this matter
It seems that with this TeeDee I can't go terribly wrong. The price is reasonable for an unused engine. I am not looking for all-out performance, and if it has some "wrong" parts I can get better ones, or try to find the "ultimate collectible" TeeDee version later.
I guess the most important thing is the number 4 cylinder, then I can be certain that it's a tapered one.
The seller has a traveling job, he told me he'll send some pictures this weekend and next weekend I can get the engine. Can't wait I'll be sure to show it off here when I get it.

Re: TeeDee 049 differences?
Kari,
read this on Wikipedia to have a better feel of what cylinders COX built on their engines.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cox_model_engine#Cylinders
I have a couple of New In Box TD049 and 051 tapered cylinder engines that I have kept and saved as collectibles. They all sold around 70-80USD on ebay (plus shipment) but without a box chances are yours for 25 bucks is also of this run.
But do not be disappointed if yours for 25 is a later, thick-wall cylinder design as those are also terrific runners.

To help you visually decide, this is a number 4 stamped thin and stepped wall cylinder with tapered bore:

(An antique product I would certanly bid for should it ship to Hungary, but it does not).
And this one is not stamped, thick wall, without tapering (a newer product) sold also by COX International:

Re: TeeDee 049 differences?
OK, got the pictures. The TeeDee in question has the thick wall cylinder, big exhaust ports and there is a screen on the intake velocity stack. So it's a late one, and maybe not the "ultimate" TeeDee to have. There's also an NIB extra #1702 glowhead, original tools and the manual AND a slighly suffered but complete PeeWee .020. For the PeeWee and the glowhead he wants some extra but I think I'll go for it.
I see these are often much cheaper in eBay but most of them are in US and the shipping + customs are killers. Plus I don't have an eBay account nor paypal.
However I think I do have enough engines now. Until the next great deal comes along anyway
Next thing to do is to make a list of all the spare and service parts I need and make an order. And of course keep on scouting for new engines

Re: TeeDee 049 differences?
Don't let the thick wall cylinder deter you from a purchase. It boils down to fit. I've seen them go both ways. Some of my best runners are the thick walled cylinders. However, my preference is the stepped walled thin cylinder. I prefer those due to some of them having the oil hole in the bottom of the conrod. What I don't care for on the thin wall is the fact that mine have no flats on the top for the wrench. All of the Kustom Kraftmanship TD's I've used were all the thick walled cylinders and they performed unlike any TD I ever witnessed. It all comes down to fit. Ken

If you plan on running suction then that screened intake is very desirable. You can't get them that way anymore.

Yes, that makes sense. The screen restricts airflow and causes an increase of vacuum in the venturi. If I drill the pressure port open and pressurise the fuel tank, should I go with a screenless intake for maximum power?

Re: TeeDee 049 differences?
OK, today I got the engines. The seller was a nice fellow, we spent almost an hour chatting about model airplanes, motors, composite structures etc. in his shop.
The plastic part, that the carburetor is attached to, was broken on this engine, but there was a spare part already purchased. He also threw in 4 Cox wrenches and a couple of propellers. Here's a pic of the engines as received:
So the TeeDee is a later one, with a #4 thick wall cylinder. Not exactly the "hot rod" I wanted but nice engine nonetheless.
I replaced the plastic part, it was surprisingly easy although it was such a tight fit that I was afraid to break the new part. Hopefully I didn't set the end play too tight. I ran into some problems while removing the glow head, I'll start a new thread about that soon.
The PeeWee is fine, incredibly cute little thing for an engine. The fuel tank has some large scuffs but I've already located an NOS tank, gasket sets, wrenches, spare glow heads and some other parts. I would like to install it to an "old timer" free-flight pylon-style model with rc assist. I am an optimist, hence I am concerned that it'll fly so well that I'll lose the sight of it RC assist would only be used to keep it in sight and guide it back after it runs out of fuel, maybe rudder only. I already have a 30-year old Guillow's Fairchild 24 which is rubber powered but the instructions say that a .020 can be installed instead of rubber. The plane flew OK while on power but glided like a cinderblock (slightly better than a brick), so the extra weight of rc equipment is probably out of the question. But we'll see.
