Slow combat plane: "Slow Bat"
Hi Guys
I received a slow combat plane kit from a friend the other day and started building.
It is called a "Slow Bat". It uses a 15 size engine.
Here are some pics so far:
I want to build it as a plane to just throw around. I always am afraid of doing new manoeuvres with my planes, so this will be what this plane is for.

Re: Slow combat plane: "Slow Bat"
Theo, my son and I have been building with foam for quite some time. Learned all kinds of tricks. The main thing to flying a foamie is light and power. What are you powering it with? Cleaning up your trailing edge would certainly assist in good flying. I usually clean them up prior to installation by trimming them up with a straight edge and a new razor blade. Yours could be sanded. The spars can be shaved down flush using a razor plane followed by a block sander. One thing very important to these planes is the trailing edge. Generally prior to gluing the wood tips on, I glue a piece of weed whacker cord (heavy fishing line) centered on the trailing edge from tip to tip. The cord is one piece and I drill a small hole through the fuse for it to pass through and the tips get applied over the ends. Don't get too aggressive with the foam as it can really put a divot in it. One thing that can really help is if you have some lightweight silkspan or OO silkspan. Apply a wet strip onto the trailing edge using thinned white glue lapping 1" top and bottom from root to tip. This will improve the strength immensely. Where is the bellcrank being installed? I suppose on top of the fuse in the hardwood area? Whenever a bellcrank is on top and is slightly higher than the tip guide exiting at the wingtip the vertical CG is off which usually makes the outboard wing fly tip high. Don't add more tip weight to compensate for this. Using your iron on a low setting twist the outboard wing near the trailing edge up and iron and hold until it cools. Circle the iron when heating and do not stay in one spot. A key to knowing how hot is the extruded beads of foam will begin to raise up. Your at the max heat so anymore will melt it. Good luck and happy flying. Ken

Re: Slow combat plane: "Slow Bat"
Thanks for the tips Ken.
I will be using my MVVS 15. It runs very well and I hope it will be enough.
I will be adding some wood trailing edges to the wings to clean it up and strengthen it.
Yes the bellcrank will be on top. I will remember that with the wing. I normally just add a small piece of Balsa at the edge on the outer wing to udjust the up or down where needed.
I will not be covering with iron on material. The guy that flies with me, normally use tissue paper with thinned white glue to cover the wings. I will be trying that and see what happens. Then I will paint over it.
What is a good finished weight for a 15 size plane like this? I hope mine will not be too heavy.
Thank you again for the tips.

I have done some more:
It is now approximately 265grams.
Hope the weight is in check.

Re: Slow combat plane: "Slow Bat"
I have done some more. I have covered the wings with tissue paper and glue:
I decided to get my two sons involved with the painting. The one is 6 and the other 2 years old.
This is how it turned out:
I still have to add the fuel proofer.

The plane is done
It finished at 620grams ready to fly.
We also flew it. It flies actually really good. Is fast and turn a very tight corner. I am really happy with it.

Re: Slow combat plane: "Slow Bat"
Thanks for the comments guys.
Yes I told my boys this is now our plane.
Unfortunately they could not be there for the maiden flight. But in 2 weeks time I will take them out and show them how it flies.
