Baja Bug / Dune Buggy Recoil Starter

Baja Bug / Dune Buggy Recoil Starter
Looking for some help, just got going on a restoration of a Baja Bug. The engine I have is the black handle pull start. Took it apart since it was all gummed up. Got it working really free, on reassembly it seems I am missing something (may have been missing when I got it). I have the plastic housing and plastic spinner with cable, then the spring is wound around inside housing. There is a flat (thrust) washer on top then the cut-out washer with the word UP printed on it, I put this assembly on the crankcase and attached the snap ring. There must be another piece because the way it is now when the cord is pulled there is nothing to transfer the motion to the crank.
Sorry for the lengthy explanation, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks !

Do you remember seeing 2 small metal discs, those stop the engine from spinning backwards.
Does your engine look like this?

There we go

No I do not recall seeing the 2 small discs, and I do not see a pic if you were posting one - thanks.

I fixed the picture! I forgot I couldn't steal pictures from my Google site as Google has the pics protected from being linked from offsite locations. Anyway, You need the discs there so the pull starter can turn over the engine. I'll go take apart my recoil to show you the discs... Check back here in a few minutes.

That's a great help, they must not have been in there. I don't imagine they are available anywhere. I might be able to make some since I'm a toolmaker. Thanks for your help !

While you have it apart is it possible for you to measure the thickness and diameter for me, will save me from having to guess.

Re: Baja Bug / Dune Buggy Recoil Starter
I would be more then happy to give you the measurements but I cant find my micrometer, I have been looking for it for a week. Maybe Matt or Bernie will weigh in on this topic and give you the exact specs. I couldn't imagine it would be too hard to make them, get a rod the same diameter of the discs (centrifugal starter clutch flyweights, just remembered the name) and cut them down to the right thickness... Shouldn't be too hard.
I'll try to give you a rough measurement with a tape measure...

I’ve got an engine and drive shaft in search of a car. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum.
Well, what kind of engine and drive shaft? Do you have a picture. If you're looking for a Cox chassis for it, we will need to know a little bit more, otherwise you might be able to build a car using those parts.
You might be better off starting a new thread about your parts.

Many times it's the other way around.
As Jacob suggested, start a new thread with pictures. You might need to post here a few time first to meet the time requirement.
