Re: What Cox Plane is this
Eric, I think it's a "Hustler"..
The Cox "Hustler" part# 3315 engine#21924 manufactured 1978-79 per www.mh-aerotools.de
EDIT: apparently it was re-named in 1981 as the "Wild Wings" series #6290 "Red Wing Racer"

Re: What Cox Plane is this
The red "Hustler" (#3315) and yellow "Mantas" (#3325 same plane, different stripes) first appeared in the 1977 Cox catalog. No version shown for '79, reappeared in '80 as the as a red "Red Devil" ("Wild Wings") with new graphics and again redone in '81 as the red "Red Wing Racer". In '82 it was blue as the "Blue Angel" and continued on till '85, when the Bears won the Super bowl in such a dominate manor it unlikely caused the ended the production of the model...
There is no black version shown of the Hustler in any catalog, but it's got the same stripes as the "Hustler", so you could possibly assume it was a black version of the #3315 Hustler? Here's a photo of the "Red Devil" graphics on a black plane, so it's very likely they did mix it up a little at the factory.

Re: What Cox Plane is this
I think you pinned it Mark I have never seen one of these before to compare / guess when I checked ebay I didn't describe it right the first time and yea they were mixing them up from the look of this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cox-049-Wild-Wings-/370709615159?pt=US_Radio_Control_Control_Line&hash=item565003d237 Well that's the extent of my plastic plane inventory I guess for that price I could fly it if it will

Re: What Cox Plane is this
Roddie pinned it, i just elaborated on it, lol. I always thought these would be a great RTF speed plane with a hot engine and a pair of thin racing wheels.
Re: What Cox Plane is this
Well in that case THANK YOU RODDIE

Re: What Cox Plane is this
That's a really cool looking plane. But the control rod looks pretty bendy. Is it braced anywhere?

Re: What Cox Plane is this
Hi Rusty , No it don't have a guide , just an cut out for the rod to go through to the center of the body back to elevator control. It doesn't seem to flex but don't have much down and probably don't need it Eric
