Wanted My second RR-1 aka RR-051

Post  WingingIt74 Thu Jan 08, 2015 8:22 am

I really want to find a used silver/blue RR-1... maybe someday...

Anyway, I bought a second RR-1 last week on eBay and  I'm not quite sure what to do with it.... I bought it for $75, but it has some issues...
My second RR-1 aka RR-051 _5710

The head, cylinder, piston and backplate are wrong.  Since it has a newer backplate, the venturi had been modified. It's not a show piece by any means, but it has the presence, so to speak.

My questions are...
• Find the correct parts?
• Run it as modified?
• What cylinder should I put on it?
• Make it a hybrid, put a newer, venom type cylinder/piston and see what I get?

What are your thoughts?

Put one of Bernie's TD cylinders on it, screaming fast. Go with a Nelson head and let's see what it will do!

First thing that occurred to me was to build a "period hot-rod" out of it. That is, if it were mine Wink Ditch the muffler and starter spring obviously, and find a genuine early-sixties TeeDee head, piston and cylinder.

I am thinking of re-creating something that an amateur competitor / hot rodder might have created 50 years ago. Then of course a period-style plane to go with it.

Just an idea Smile

Hmmm... that's a very good idea as well.  I defiantly ditched the muffler and starter spring.  I'll have to look to see what cylinder was on it, it defiantly was done a while back.

The Early Tee Dee cylinder were a thin wall, dual port design, they also used a hi-comp head. I'm not sure what the first versions had, if any for a stamp. I know later ones had a #4, I'll check later tonite when i'm home.

The RR-1 were a dual port but did not have a stamp, later ones did have the "1" like the Space Hopper and used a standard head.

Not 100%, but here's an early minty Tee Dee with a #4 cylinder.

I think the backplate is from the late 60s or early 70s... what are my options for that time period? I'll have to post a pic tonight.

My next question is, does anyone have a spare laying around? I may have one, but it's a whole engine.

It will be fun to see if any mods actually make it turn faster. I'll have to run it head-to-head with my stock RR-1.

Unless somebody drilled out a early stunt tank backplate its probably original. The ventless backplate first appeared in '58 with intro of Golden Bee. I've got a early RR-1 ventless backplate that has the clear plating on it.

Well... how about they modified the venturi to fit a newer backplate????

They did a pretty good job... made me cringe when I took the backplate off though....

Here is the modified tank. I also enlarged the intake hole to be the same size as on a Black Widow.

Looks a lot better!
The backplates used on RR-1 are basically drilled out (don't remember, but it was a common size) to fit the intake tube, see above photos. However it looks like the tank may have been buggered up to fit the newer backplate. I wouldn't feel bad running this guy, it would be fun to see what it does. But if you ever wanted to restore it of sorts, you could try a blue felt tip pin on the tank and shoot it with some semigloss clear, it wouldn't be fuel proof but would look good.
