I'm not sure they may have ground the fins down and the re-oxidised them or maybe it's a custom cylinder.

this is the "standard" vintage thin wall cylinder, right?
i guess one could replace it with a cylinder from a super bee like mine.

No, the thin wall was only thinner around the exhaust ports this looks like it has less cooling fins.

Yeah I drilled four holes out of a tee dee .020 cooling Finns and the performance went up by 1,500 rpm but the glow head burned after about 10 runs.

It was accepted practice to turn down the fins for a 1/2A speed plane during those times. The Space Hopper replaced the Thermal Hopper, which was an excellent speed engine of the day.

Note that the engine is missing the needle assembly. You could probably use one from a Thermal Hopper or a TD .049 to make it run.

I'm sure they did. Even with the forced cooling of a cowling, running high nitro and small prop are a deadly combo for plugs.

I only flew one 1/2A speed plane...back in ~1955 I had an OK .049 powered "speed" plane. It didn't fly well, wasn't fast, and didn't last long. Sad

Slow and doesn't fly well is a deadly combo for a speed plane as is an OK cub I found they don't have a good power output and are heavy.

I was a young guy when this engine was in local Hobby shop display case. I bought it on lay away and could not wait till I paid total amount. $6.95 back then.
Engine was used in a Midwest Satellite 320. Engine ran great from the very beginng. Flew great and will never forget the joy of using it combined with a great Model. I went back to same H/S and bought a RR1 on lay away. Same price $6.95. Another great Cox legend. Later the TD .049 came out $7.95. Great times and wonderful Cox engines.

i was born in 57 so i never had that chance to get a new space hopper. i do remember getting a cox plane when was 7 in 65. I dont remember what it was called but it had a 049 in it. My dad was the one who used to start if for me he was always scared that i would get hurt starting it. i do remember flying it every weekend until one of the lines snapped when that happened it took a nosedive into the ground. I did get a new RR1 from a hobby shop when I was around 12 in 69 or 70. i do know the rr1 was over in 1965 but the shop must not have sold it until i got it. those were good times! unlike today where you go to the hobby shop and say "do you have any 1/2a fuel?' and the kid says "huh? we have this wild cat car fuel and this traxxas stuff" no one carries anything for these engines or anything in the 1/2a range.

I know what you mean when inwent in to my local hobbyshop and asked for fuel with castor oil the answer was we don't usually carry it because it messed up some peoples pull starts but then they phoned the company who makes the fuel they found out they made some and they then ordered it and I had itbwithin a week and it's great stuff.
Half a stuff is so hard to comeby nowadays unless one is on the Internet.
Just some meaningless rant from me about new stuff that's no way as fun as fuel power apart from micros they are kind of fun like the blade msr and ERC micro stik.

yeah there rude up there. you walk in and say do you have a 6x3 prop? they replay "sir we dont carry noting that small for a gas engine, the only small props we have are for electric" you ask them to order it and they say 'we have no intention on dealing those items", they picked up a catalog fliped through ripped out the page and handed me the page he said "theres the phone number, theres the prop item number, you go ahead and order it yourself"

Our hobby shop is probably the rudest hobby shop you'll ever go in. First off, when you want to see something behind the counter like a engine or such, the two guys just sit there and talk. You say excuse me, and they just look at you and act like your bothering them. They used to have a bunch of Cox engines and models. When you ask them where something is, they usually just say "it is most likely down one of those isles" or in that "general area". Just the other day, I went up there for some more Sig 25%. All they had was car fuel and some all synthetic plane fuel. I said "wheres all the sig?" and they replied "well, supply and demand, your the first to ask for it in 2 years". They did however have Byron 25% with 16% all Castor, I bought that and added some extra Castor to make it 20% oil content. I also asked them "where did all the cox props go?" (since they had like 100 of them in a box at one time) they said "I don't know, they might be in the back but I cant check right now". They had some 6x3 wood props there so i was going to get a few of those, when I was checking out the kid said "do you have a balancer?" I don't, so i said "no" he then said "well then I can't sell these to you, at those speeds, a unbalanced prop will fly apart". I bought most of my NIB cox engines there and most of my cox things up there. They had like 30 cox models NIB just in the last 2 years. They are gone now just like most of the cox things up there. They still have 2 models for sale in their display case, a NIB PT-19 from the 80s and a Fokker D-VII (looks new but no box). They want something like $150 a plane.

Go check out their reviews, the only reason i still go there is because it is less then a mile from my house. http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=6258887841374876196&q=hub+hobby+shop&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.496064,65.214844&ie=UTF8&ll=50.457504,-128.320312&spn=0,0&z=4

wow, thats bad. my local hobby shop still sells the stuff, because they are specialized on gliders and some people still
use cox engines with the glider mount for powered ascent., so i guess i'm sort of a lucky guy Smile
