So Roger... sounds like we're in the same boat. I just returned to the hobby and have 4 planes in the works, 2 very close to flying, maybe this weekend if I get the engines running smoothly! Have you flown anything yet?

yes the pilot will bee 1/16" plywood.
are you asking if i could engrave the decals on with the laser? if so i can but, it would only bee single sided. it gets very involved to try and work both sides of the sheet

Well since its raining I made some progress on both the stunt trainer and bipe.
Here is the bipe so far. Coming together nicely.

Sweet! Those burned edges add a lot of character to the plane. You'll have a unique model there Rog!

Awesome work so far on the projects. I have to agree with you that one laser cut and etched would look great. I have one such bird here since returnig, Baby Ringmaster, that is just clear doped and doculam covered wing. It looks good in my opinion, in which yours with burnt edges and etched would bee even better.

That's how the guns were mounted before they figured out how to make them shoot through the propeller without hitting the blades Smile

well i thought about turning the crankcase 90 degrees and mounting the gun on the fuse but yes,  many where mounted on the wing.  i have a model that my dad built 30 some years ago and the gun is in the same position.

early ww1 bipes had top mounted guns before the development of the synchronizer. the early beginnings of combat planes

thanks!
i have not weighed it yet. i will when i get home. it has a little extra weight in it with the ply added to the fuse and i used the machine gun and pilot that i had cut from 1/8" ply instead of 1/16"

Well, how ignorant am I? lol!

Live and learn, thanks for answering. I knew they early planes had problems synchronizing, I just assumed they didn't bother mounting guns at that time! Embarassed

i did a little reading on it this morning. this was back when the military considered planes to only be good for recon and not combat. it was the pilots that at first where carrying rifles and eventually mounted guns

Roger, that should make for a very attractive bipe once painted and decorated. You could go with various schemes, too, French, English, Lafayette Escadrille American, American Hat-in-Ring, etc. As an alternate, replace pilot with machine gun holding Hillbilly similar to Hobby Shack's The Real Thing pilot with bright yellow and red pseudo-French finish.

If detailed by laser cutter like you did with the fuselage front, you could add panel lines and even faux bullet holes.

As a thought, one could even resize a photo of a personal bust, make a sheet balsa backer and have one's face as the pilot.
Possibilities are endless. drunken Airplane

During this time of war research and development, they came up with incendiary ammunition. What a wickedly wonderful weapon it was to the pursuing pilot and a dreaded horror to the receiving pilot. No longer did one have to damage engine, fuel systems, controls, airframe structure, wound or kill the pilot. Parachute technology was in its infancy, hence no emergency chutes. A simple hit through the flammable doped fabric covering was sufficient to send a pilot to his flaming death.

Since one carried limited ammunition, aerial combat was restrained by the number of minutes one could engage plus the amount of fuel one needed to return. Being able to sight down the barrel of a synchronized machine gun firing through the propeller arc ensured greater accuracy for kills with less ammunition and likelihood of returning after downing one's opponents or forcing him to use all his ammunition.

A highly maneuverable plane ensured a quicker bead sight for kills. This is why the slower highly maneuverable Fokker Dr1 Triplane was preferred until better aircraft were available (Fokker DVI, DVII and DVIII).

That bipe is FANTASTIC!!! Clapping

Very well done, I would be tempted to finish it in clear to show off the burned edges.

Love it!
