Sig Twister, My First Big Bird Empty Sig Twister, My First Big Bird

Post  NEW222 Tue Jul 05, 2016 7:03 pm

Hi all. So, I thought, ok with a bit of help, that I would post for you all to see my first big bird. A Sig Twister. I will summarize the story a bit here. Saw an ad on our version of Craigslist up here for a 'LOT' of RC planes and the gentleman wanted $1500. Normally, I do not even look at those ads, but that day I did, and am glad. While cruising through the ad, I saw something familiar. The Sig Twister amongst all the other RC planes (trainers, sport-aerobatic, up to a 1/4 scale Cub with floats and wheels). All were built by the same gentleman and never flown or started. So I called him up and later he returned my call. This is when he said that he did not want to split up the package, but invited me over to see it and the rest anyways, as he said if not sold in a 'LOT' in a couple weeks, he would then sell it to me. So I show up and look at it. Then he wanted to talk so I lent him my ear for a while and he was an interesting gentleman. As I was leaving, I thanked him for his time and allowing me to come out to check out his stuff, he offered me the chance to purchase the Twister. It is new, never flown with a new in package set of .015 x 60 feet lines, new in package Sullivan handle, and new never run (only mounted) Fox .35 50th Anniversary edition engine. I had been saving up for something like this used, but scrounged up a bit more to buy it. It does have a few little things/problems to address, but it will fly. Only later rather than sooner, as I will not have fuel for the Fox till early August. Anyways, enjoy the picture of my new bird.

The only other thing is that he did not have the plans for it anymore, but I have acquired a set of the Francher Twister and a low resolution copy of the original (better than nothing) in case of mishap! Shocked So, I put it out on another forum, and will try here as well. If anybody would happen to have a hi resolution copy of it and could send it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you again.

Rock and Roll!

Check the usual stuff/ problem areas ie: hinges, leadouts and engine mounts. Then have some fun!

Running a good bit of fuel through that Fox off the plane will make your maiden much more relaxing.

This is a marvelous choice for a first bigun. As you know, I've been keeping up with your lively thread over at the other forum. And the advice coming in here so far matches the first replies over there, so you know a lot of us are looking out for you.

Very cool man you'll find that they are quite easy to fly Makes me want to build mine now. BTW since the fox is new, as Ron said, I would bolt it to a bench and run it for an hour or so to loosen it up a bit before flight. They are on the tight side out of the box. (Bandit)

Thank you all for the compliments, help, tips, and advice. I will most definitely remove the engine and bench run it before flying it. I will however have to wait till early August to do this as the correct fuel is not available here, and am hoping to pick some up at the Fargo Control Line contest. I will then be on my way.

The Fox is lapped iron. It WILL take a quart of good fuel to get it to somewhat flyable. Brodak sells good fuel for the fox in quarts with reasonable shipping charges.

Pop the back cover and check for filings. Flush the engine with fresh fuel. Since the engine was never run this should not hurt the gasket. If filings are present make sure they are removed and consider taking the engine apart to clean. (I might be paranoid but I do this to all engines)

Break in takes several days. After a quart, if the engine holds the needle setting and starts with relative ease it can be mounted.

Start on prime, after a bunch of starts move up to short, 30 second runs. Then after several of these move on to longer runs until it is happy for 5-7 minute runs. Then run the quart out on these flight time runs.

Phil

Ha! Flight time runs, eh? I guess you didn't ever see me fly then? Shocked I guess an ounce or two should do fine. Laughing

Ok. On a more serious note. I have up until this point of time only flown Cox reedies, so advancing to a run over 2 minutes will definitely be interesting. But, as I have watched, it appears that these larger planes move a bit slower.

They are on longer lines so they appear slower and you're not turning like a top lol. Also be prepared for considerably more pull. If possible I would fly short flights to begin with until you get used to it. Flying wise you'll find that they are easier and smoother to fly. (Bandit)

New222,

Let me know if you still need a copy of the original plans for the stock Twister.  I have a NIB kit and would be glad to get a copy of the plans and mail them to you. Just let me know.
