What size of a model should I look for my mid-70's OS MAX 15? Any examples?

When I surf around outerzone.com I find that the wingspans of models for .15 engines vary from about 30 to 45 inches. Of course plans made in the '50s for a .15 engine assume that the engine is heavier and less powerful than the OS but still there is a lot of variation. I am looking for a robust model that is not very fast but could do some basic stunts. Preferably with a built up wing. The fuselage can be a slab or a box.

The Ringmaster Jr., or Nobler Jr. would be good. I am flying a Sig Shoestring with an old fox 15 the flys great, but it has a solid wing & fuse.

A Flite Streak Junior gets my vote. The JR Ring is not a good example for a stunt plane. Unless built light, it pretty much has the characteristics of a cinder block. The larger .35 Ring flies far superior to the JR. The Flite Streak Junior though has a decent wingspan and square inches.

RK and Ken, Thanks for the tips. Kits sold in the USA get expensive when shipped to Europe, and then there are customs fees also, so it's going to be a scratch build this time.

Most of the models mentioned have about 30 in wingspan and fuselages are about 20in. I'll look for something along these lines from outerzone.com.

My OS Max .15 R/C hauled my Carl Goldberg Eaglet 50 around the sky with no problem. 50" wingspan, at least 2 or 3 pounds with my old Kraft 4ch radio. It was a trainer so not very aerobatic but the engine had plenty of power to do what ever the plane could do. I think I used to run 15% Nitro Cool Power fuel.
OS makes great engines, when I was running fuel they were my engine of choice.

Might I suggest the Peacemaker Very Happy  http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=1633  I found the plans on Outerzone when I decided to try my hand and enter an RCGroups Brit Plan Buildoff a couple of years ago.  I really enjoyed the build and built two of them just for the heck of it.  They will do everything I have the ability to do!!  I tried posting pictures but I must be doing something wrong because they went to www.servimg.com and I' not sure I  know how to get them back!  I really think you might enjoy it as well  Smile .

In 1975 OS dropped the steel finned Max-III for a new OS .15 with a drop-in liner. Do you need to use a muffler (extra weight)?

My vote goes to the Flite Streak Jr. flown on braided steel .012x52' lines.

The profile Peacemaker is an excellent ship sized between the Flite Streak and the Flite Streak Jr. It was sized for a little more power and a modern OS .15 would be better unless you shorten the lines a bit.

Hi! Not to necessarily contradict George but that's exactly the engine I'm using on one of my two Peacemaker, the old OS Max .15 with the OS 702 muffler mounted on it and I've used both a Master Airscrew 8x5 prop and an APC 7x6 prop. I can do loops, wingovers, fly inverted, outside loops, lazy eights, pretty much just my skill level for playing around Very Happy ! The second Peacemaker has an OS Max .10 with OS 761 muffler but that just isn't enough power to do much so it's just hanging on the rack until I can get another .15 Wink

It seems to be the later model with aluminum fins. I think I will use a muffler, as I want this plane to have longer flight times and since it will be for slightly more advanced training, I will most likely fly it more too. (EDIT: I don't mean that the muffler would give a longer run time but less noise means more tolerance from people nearby and less ringing in my ears afterwards.)

The muffler (#702) weighs about 36 grams or 1,2 oz, so although it feels light, it actually makes for 25% of the weight of the combination. I guess I could use the muffler while practising and when I feel confident, I could remove it, thus moving the CG back a little and ending up with a better power-to-weight ratio.

Actually this gave me an idea. More about that later, maybe Huh...

BTW I still think with your glider you'd be better off with e-power (come on to the dark side, it'll be a hoot Very Happy ) or at least a throttled glow engine Smile

yes i got a medallion 15 rc for drum roll please $50!!!!!!cheers ex model engines are selling one for $99! and mine has never been run since 1965 just kept in a paper bag all that time Sad

When I started flying 4 years ago I started with this, it comes ready for a 450 size electric motor, but my uncle and I retrofitted it to fit a os15 la nitro engine, it flew great, nice and tame. It had just the right amount of power

It's a good thing you spoke up. The Max .15 must have a bit more power than I thought since the Peacemaker was designed for the Oliver Tiger .15. Another good plane about that size is a Spanish ship called the Smousen.

What lines do you use with it?

Hi Eric! Hi George! I built both of mine for control line flight. I've flown on .015 x 42'-1" steel cable with pretty good success. I've also used a set of .015 x 52'-3" that seem to work just fine but I could probably add a bit more outboard tip weight to counter the extra cable but what the heck it's all been for just fun flying anyway a few .... loops .... inverted .....lazy eights, wingovers .... that's about it!! Very Happy

Instead of extra tip weight you might consider using .012's instead of .015's. I think you'll find less bow in the lines and more pull.
