I picked up a Tee Dee .049 on EBay the other day. It has a #5 stamped in the exhaust port which, from what I have read, is a .051 cylinder. The piston is a regular .049 one, no line around the skirt. The compression is good & it should run, I haven't tested it yet. I never did get the difference between the Tee Dee .049 & .051. I always assumed you needed the correct piston for the cylinder. The cylinder does have the correct Tee Dee porting. Huh...

I plan on using an old Tarno carb I have on this engine to try & come up with a dependable r/c set up. I will probably be trying different cylinder types to achieve a more dependable, mellow engine rather than a finicky hot rod. Any suggestions?
I have come classic 1's, 2's, 4's, 5's, 6's as well as a few newer Slit Exhaust cylinders from Cox International.

Tony

If it has no ring around the base of the piston, it's an.049 piston in an .049 cylinder.
What colour is the carb?......Red or black? Red is .051, black, .049.

FWIW I have several .049 and .051 Tee Dee's that I've used for many years for 1/2A F/F, and some of them I have mixed and matched to get the most out of 2 or 3 of them.
Not hard to do, as everything fits except a .051 piston into a .049 cylinder.......And of course a .049 piston is loose in a .051 cylinder.

You are correct the #5 is a TD .051 but what puzzles me is the the fact that it has compression. the .051 has a slightly larger bore diameter and while the .049 piston will fit, it should have little if no compression I wonder if you have a piston that lacks the grove or some reason hmm easy way to check is to try the piston in an other known .049 cylinder if it don't fit it's a .051 if it does it's an .049.
(The bandit is curious)

OOPS
got beat to it sorry anyway Gosse is right it could be a tuned setup.

OK, after reading the replies I did some experimentation. First I tried TDbandits' suggestion & tried a #2 cylinder on it, perfect fit & compression, so it is indeed a .049 piston. The engine does have the correct black carb mount which I did remove to make sure it had a TD crank & not a Medallion, Bandit is not the only one who is curious.
Next I went into the parts box & got .051 piston with the ring & it would not fit into the "new" #5 cylinder.
My only conclusion is this cylinder is mis stamped, it's a small 5 stamped inside the exhaust port.

Now I just need for someone to tell me that it is a super rare 1 of 3 known to exist Item worth $$$$$  lol!

1/2A Nut...pretty impressive stats. I'm going to be going for more of a sport flyer engine with maybe just a little extra juice just in case I need it to get out of trouble.
What is this performance crank of which you speak?

Sure here it is on the left compared to a standard TD Crank also an aluminum carb body for better cooling but more so for a fantastic leak proof seal / NV body and venturi can be torqued down to never comes loose nor of a crack in the plastic carb body.

Ok...Cool
A "Killer" crank for the Tee Dee
I have a couple of those Tee Dee billit Aluminum carb bodies from VGE Hobbies, one black & one red anodized
I notice yours came with seals / gaskets...
Mine did not Huh...

I only buy from the originator who machines a groove up front for the O ring since the aluminum retaining collar isn't very thick. The back has more surface contact for a wide teflon seal making this leak proof as possible for drawing in fuel through the venturi or RC carb.

Note the TD .050 RC engine that comes non SPI with muffler uses this crank for higher performance it was also part of the original crank in the first litemachines helicopters for max performance when they first came out they used Cox TD's.

Lots of good info...Thanks
I guess I have to make some gaskets...
There is a slight groove up front, not real even all the way around & almost lost in the anodizing but it is there.
How do you keep from wrecking the O ring with the collet?

You can blow up the pic and compare. The one I have is quite pronounced and fits the O ring well as to avoid damage during assembly.

Back in the 70's I bought NIP what was labeled as Cox .049 to .051 conversion cylinder. The piston did not have the ring and the piston wouldn't fit a .049 cylinder. My cousin couldn't understand why my Satan was just a bit faster than his. Huh... I still have that engine around here somewhere.
