Son's First Flight - Flight Report
Continued from the thread "Father -Son 1/2A Build"... I switched topics because this is now a flying topic and not a building topic.
What a great experience this has been. From my boy getting a plane kit in the mail to his making his first solo and successful flight in the ring, this has been a lot of fun already. So yesterday was a BIG day for Nicholas and I. After a long and careful building experience, me getting my flying legs back after decades and coming up with a good running Babe Bee, Nicholas' plane was finally ready to fly.
We trained by flying in the yard by whipping the plane around the circle without the engine running with 6 foot lines. That worked pretty well. Then I ran around the circle maneuvering the plane up and down as he rotated in the center holding the handles operating the controls. That helped too. Then this Sunday he was ready.
I took his L'il Wizard up for the first time and it flew like a dream. Nose heavy and super smooth! Very steady flight and the plane responded well to elevator input. After the maiden flight, he joined me in the circle to put his hand in the handle with mine on top as we circled together. (We did this also for one run with my DeweyBird although for this first run his hand was on top of mine. I see now the Deweybird by comparison is very reactive to input, almost twitchy.)
During his second time on the circle he wanted me to let go of the handle, and I did, reluctantly. So I figured, he wants to fly, now's the time. And fly, he did. I was still right there, hand just above his, circling with him for a few circles until I pulled back and let him go. He had it, and he did well. He landed it in the grass and I was impressed.
So next flight, he was absolutely ready to go it alone in the middle of the ring, no teacher. He took off with a smooth ascent and maintained his composure and altitude as he made 25 or 26 laps with a 5cc tank and brought her in for a beautiful landing. (I have been getting 7 to 8 laps on 5cc after tuning and running to the handle. I can't figure out how he got so many laps! That engine just kept running and running.)
He forgot to step back while flying so he landing on our cement takeoff runway but it was smooth landing until he rolled into the grass. So this long road has a happy ending, which now is a very happy beginning to a new chapter of what will hopefully be a lifetime of control line flying. Something he and I can continue to do together.
Check him out in the video using proper launch protocol! Lol... makes a dad proud. Greg

Congratulations nicholas!!! Very impressive first flight. Try Bending your arm and keep the elbow in and it will bee more comfortable and easier to control.
The plane looks great in the air!

Daaaaang, he made it look easy!
Do you know how many people have flown their first flight cool, tight, and level... no? That's because almost nobody does. Good work both of you. That man isgoing to be a pilot! The only person I've ever known that did that on the first flight is CEF's own Microflitedude, Matt, with my Li'l Satan when he was 14.
I'm proud to have been a small part of helping get you guys going. Y'all took it and followed through all the way.

It's so cool to have easy access to video these days.
I know my first few flights were not nearly that successful or long. I learned to make repairs rather than fly much early on

Re: Son's First Flight - Flight Report

Great job indeed, both of you!
And I liked that clear launch signal, very precise and safe way to communicate. Thanks to Rusty too for posting the procedure earlier.

Thanks!
Wow. Thanks for the kind words and support ! It's been a really cool experience. You guys have been a tremendous source of inspiration, guidance and the international comraderie here on CEF is fantastic.
Nicholas is grateful as well... I had the family read your posts. We're looking forward to a whole lot more flying and learning in the months and years ahead.
Thanks for the certificate Roger and Eric. Very cool! Nicholas will really get a kick out of it. Will share more videos when he has skills to demonstrate.

You're right. Tears of joy have already flowed my friend! And I do archive these videos for the family to view in later years, make a set for each kid and keep a set in the safe deposit box too. Moments captured for a lifetime.

Flying Update
He wanted to go flying again this past weekend (yay!). And... I got my father out there to watch him. Three generations at the flying field. I think pops may want a run at the circle next.
Another several flights on his trainer and no mishaps. He's definitely getting comfortable with being in the ring. He wants to do a loop, bless his heart. I want to do a loop first but simultaneously don't want to hold him back but the L'il Wizard isn't the most loop-friendly model to do a beginner's first loop with I'm sure.
Happy flying .
Greg
PS We had the Stuka out again, it still does not want to fly. I'll get in airborne one of these days soon.

Grandpa joins us at the field.

The Wiz will loop, but not well. It needs to be taken almost overhead to do it. If the boy wants to loop a new plane is probably in order.
The other option is to take some of the nose off.

Generally adding more weight to an airframe is undesireable. Depending on the AUW of the airplane adding more weight can make things worse.

Re: Son's First Flight - Flight Report
I say graduate him to a skyray! from seeing his flight vids which are Most Impressive!! I'd say he could handle it. Add a little nose weight to tame it until he gets used to it then take it off and let er rip!! the thing will loop till you're dizzy BTW didn't you have a 1/2A skyray under construction?? Just curious. (Bandit)
