Re: thank you fred !
I almost did not comment in this thread because I knew you guys would give me the WTG (way to go) Fred cudos
MY early childhood was poor like many of us here... Older neighbors went out of their way to get me interested in Amateur radio, model cars, model airplanes and help me learn how to fix my bicycles when ever my dad was away to Korea or Viet Nam
As we moved about a lot it is unfortunate that I do not remember all those moms and dads that took an interest in the neighbor children. No way at my age now to properly thank then and let them know I turned into a successful man, father, and husband
My wife has similar stories of her childhood in a steel mill town
We both look for ways to Pay It forward all the time
Any way CEF friends, sincere thanks for the kudoes but I suspect you all know that is not why I do these occasional "gifts"

Re: thank you fred !
Hey Greg, what kind of Bats? I just cranked and flew mine today. One has been built and flown, and my flying buddy just built the other one last week, so we can play chase. I built two identical hotrod engines for them, and we tried them out at the famous church yard across the street from my house. My RW&B one is 1.4 ounces heavier though.cox24711 wrote:tomorrow il send a pick of the build of the bats!

I have a thread on them, I'll be updating tonight.

Re: thank you fred !
Rusty, your giving me ideas here .....
I've got a couple of Lil' Bats collecting dust (BlackHawks 2-for-1 deal?) I also have a new-in-the-package SureStart .049 thats never been run. I can't find much info when searching for balloon tanks ... but I think I can figure something out to match the SureStart with the 'Bat.
Thanks for the motivation ...

Re: thank you fred !
Good job on the Li'l Bat Greg, but you had me worried for a minute. I was about to say that you had assembled it back-to-front, but then I noticed that the writing on the newspaper was also backwards. You're playing tricks on us with those back-to-front photos. One thing I did notice is that the tail fin looks like it's fitted straight. Have a good look at the plan and you'll see that it has to be installed on an angle. Because these combat wings don't have a tail it's really important that you off-set the fin so that you can maintain tension on the control lines. I know! I've built 2 and they are really unstable. Have a look back at a previous post I wrote about setting up your controls to make it easier to learn to fly.
Also, did you seal the balsa before you painted it? It looks pretty fuzzy. It should be sealed with dope or undercoat first and then sanded smooth before you apply the paint. Also, normal spray can enamel will come off easy with glow fuel if you don't let it cure (dry) for a fair while. Sit it out in the sun for a week or so before you run the engine. (Bring it in at night or when raining of course ).
Rod.

Re: thank you fred !
I'll try to get my Bat thread updated tonight. I have pictures of what's inside the balloons... just a piece of a plastic silly straw with holes bored in it. Evacuate the air and fill it with fuel, but not enough to stretch the balloon.larrys4227 wrote:Rusty, your giving me ideas here .....
