Bob
here is where I have been and a note to all to listen to your doctor and your body, visit your dermatologist twice a year if over 50 years old and always, always wear sunscreen, no matter where you came from, or how old you are. PLEASE.
Well I am finally back after 2 years trying to find out what was causing intense pain in my lower back. In early 2013 I started having pain on my left side in the lower back area which I have never had before. I have had lower back pain mainly on the right side since 1982 when I apparently ruptured a disc at L1-L2 trying to lift a very heavy duty battery for a solar powered site for a Naval project when I worked for General Dynamics in san Diego, CA. The pain would come and go and finally in 1990 I finally had my first of 6 back surgeries to repair the disc, clean up a vertebra that was pinching the spinal cord and finally more cleanup and L2-L5 fusion over the next few years to try to relieve pain. I was in good shape until 2005-2006 when I had the final disc-vertebrae cleanup then spinal cord stimulator installed to try to block the pain. It didn’t work. So I struggled with light to moderate pain from 2007 when I retired until 2013 when the level of pain exceeded my threshold of pain again. Back to the present. For the past 2 years I have been to pain specialists, neurosurgeon, rheumatologist, (I have rheumatoid arthritis in both hips and knees), had shots to try to relieve the pain, etc. Finally at one of the pain management specialists he advised me to see an orthopedic surgeon if the shot did not relieve the pain. At the first meeting with the ortho doc. He said it isn’t your back it is your hips. Both hips had no cartilage and were rubbing bone on bone. Sorry I am not trying to be graphic. This doctor recommended total hip replacement and here I am 3 weeks 1 day after surgery coming home just last friday, August 7th. I had a rough time at the hospital and later aftercare because I was weak in both legs, (right leg – 25 years lower back pain, left leg – total hip replacement July 21st) and the heavy drugs they put me on after surgery, (which I don’t think I needed), made me loopy, sleepy and unable to do much. After I left the hospital surgery site and went to aftercare I developed side effects such as unable to sleep, itchy, scratchy all the time. I finally worked with the in-house doctor to get me off the heavy drugs-pain killers and back to my long time pain meds and let me tell them if I need more, not the other way around. I started getting better almost immediately and physical therapy helped daily.
Before surgery I tried to keep up with CEF as much as I could. Sometimes I could, sometimes I couldn’t. I hoped that the hospital-aftercare would have wifi-internet, but they didn’t so I spent 2+ weeks doing leg exercise day and night, but little outside contact with the world except for my family on weekends and wife daily.
I hope to get back to CEF activities as soon as I can get a safe place to work and I will keep up with CEF daily happenings.
I am normally a very private person, but a couple of CEF members have contacted me a few times to find what I had been doing so here it is, the whole story.
The whole point is: listen to your doctors, and listen to your body. I struggled with back pain and refused to give up when the surgeons told me there was nothing else they could do for me. I continued to seek pain therapy or additional types of doctors in my search for help. After seeing a rheumatologist, (rheumatoid arthritis), and him saying my pain was coming from my neck after looking at my hip x-rays, I was almost disillusioned again. I was referred to a different pain management doctor for a hip injection and while discussing the situation with him we agreed I should see a orthopedic surgeon if the hip shot didn’t work. On to the orthopedic surgeon.
During this time I had a twice a year scheduled dermatology appointment and didn’t see anything potentially bad. I did mention to the dermatologist that there had been a small piece of skin on the end of my nose that would go away, then come back a few days later. The doc took a sample and sure enough, you guessed it a Basil Cell Carcinoma one of the confined types of Cxxxxx. You know the word. That’s why you go to your dermatologist twice a year and wear sunscreen. We had to remove the bad guy now. Plenty of time to remove and repair the nose before July 21st, or so I thought. Stress is stress and with each little piece, lack of sleep, skin Cxxxxx, and hip replacement I am getting more and more stressed.
Wife returns from vacation, nose surgery and plastic surgery goes well and is done 3 weeks before scheduled hip surgery. What could go wrong? Just be prepared for the worst and train as hard as you can prior to any surgery because afterwards it is too late. You are under the care of the hospital and staff and they do what they think is best for you not what you know is within your limits, (like high power pain killers and certain anesthetic drugs).

P.S. Is anyone using Win10 and having as many problems as I am, (not here). It "gathers information for microsoft and resets", and the network connection is weird most of the day. works, interruptions, works, so on. Just curious. HD

Re: Happy Birthday happydad!
Well Steve, it looks like you've been through just about enough poking & prodding for a while. I find it astounding that all the health "experts" continually tell you to see your doctor if you have any concerns, and once you get there they treat you like some sort of hypochondriac. Had a dicky knee the last few months. Feels like something floating around getting jammed between moving parts every now and then- nearly makes me collapse in pain when it happens. Dr sent me off for an x-ray, as expected, nothing obvious. Can get a CT scan but that will cost me full out of pocket. Suggested that he refer me to an Orthopedic Surgeon. Rang the surgeon to make the appointment, nothing available 'til March 31st next year.
That's not for the surgery, just the appointment for him to have a look. And the say Australia has one of the best health systems in the world.
I can also relate you your skin cancer. Like you, a strange patch of skin on the nose. First Dr, "Doesn't look like anything to worry about". Next Dr, "How long have you had that? Gotta get that off quick". Here's the results. Sorry if the picture disturbs any of you folk.

Like you, Basal cell Carcinoma. Fortunately the surgeon was steady handed and managed to preserve my youthfull good looks.
Anyway, enough about me and all our ailments. Hope your birthday was a real positive step in your life journey. We can't stop 'em, so we gotta make the best of 'em.
Rod.

It's probably the summer surfing that caused it in the first place. The Aussie sun has a lot more UV power that the nothern hemisphere sun due to our thinner Ozone layer. Not only do you burn easily but the chance of skin cancer is much higher. Everyone should protect themselves from the sun regardless.
Sorry to hijack your birthday thread Steve.

that's a "6" in red in the center of the cake.
thanks again for all your well wishes.
