Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
Okay, let's take a poll. Which laugh method do you prefer to use in discussions? Emoticon or Smiley
Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
I guess I can't make you read my blathering first and put the poll at the bottom.
When forums and electronic communication took off, we instantly needed a way to convey emotion, attitude and inference. When "Lol" came to be popular, I hated it. My kneejerk reaction is usually to dismiss pop culture without thinking it through. That usually works for me. Some early forums had pretty good emoticons, A.k.a, "Smileys," and others had crappy ones, but it was clear that it's difficult to chat and hang out with each other while isolated from facial expression, voice inflection, etcetera. And that's all based on our own interpretations of how we read the other. Blah blah blah...
Anyway, I quit using as many smileys and used "Haha" for a while. Sounds kinda stupid to me. So I started mixing "Lol" in, and it struck me as equally stupid. Maybe Jacob will get us a small laughing smiley that doesn't take up an extra line break. I guess I'll take a poll and see who likes what the best.
I have a few laughing smileys if I keep my Photobucket tab with that folder open. Here are a few. I don't think most of you guys with small screens can see them anyway. Whenever I'm on CEF it's with a big desktop display.

Re: Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
I like the "beating a dead horse" !! Although I'd use all of them at one time or another.
Thanks Rusty.
Edit: 2nd read thru I found the "poll" at the top of the thread. Vote entered!

Re: Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
I often find myself typing LOL as well as using an emoticon.
The forum software allows for 150 emoticons and so far I have 143 so choose wisely if you think you want another emoticon added to the forum!

Re: Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
I like using the emoticons.. but I do notice that some people seldom use them.. if at all. I don't like the thought of anything I write, being misunderstood or misinterpreted. I probably shouldn't worry that much about it.. but I worry about everything.. (one of my personal favorites..) Writing has actually become an obsession with me, since joining CEF. It's the only forum I'm active in. I went for decades without having much contact with modelers. No one seemed to fly control-line anymore.. or used Cox engines in any kind of model. That's why I feel passionate when I'm writing a reply or posting an idea/experience. I have some members phone #'s.. and if I didn't think I'd be bugging the crap out of them.. they'd hear from me more often. It would be cool if CEF had live video-chat rooms. Is there such a thing? Maybe hosted by Skype.. I see something like that as very possible. Make it a contact option (like a PM).. for placing a call.. or even a conference-call. Maybe ForumMotion would explore the possibilities? Advertising would pay for it. Imagine how that would be!
Re: Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
I usually don't use the LOL because of the line spacing ... I'll go with a smiley. If you were to add another 'con or two ... I would vote for different variations of a thumbs up.
Beating a dead horse is a good one .... don't know if I'd actually use it ... but it is funny.

Re: Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
Sometimes I am bad about conveying sarcasm or some tongue in cheek comment and forget to LOL or grin
but mostly I do just type ..grin at the end of a string of words
About the only time I use the Emoticons is when I am taking my time to post a happy birthday or welcome to the forum note
During my early years of on-line forums I used to get frustrated with over use of emoticons , but I don't let it bug me anymore...grin

I've seen some overuse here lately, makes the post and thread unreadable for me

Re: Lol, Haha, or an emoticon?
Thanks for your replies so far. I'm surprised nobody likes "Haha", which I use frequently. I suppose I will just keep using my Photobucket laughs for particular attitude conveyancing.
