Olympic/Sportsman Venturi Nut
Has anyone ever successfully removed/replaced the wire mesh screen on the .15 Olympic/Sportsman venturi nuts? I ask because I'm considering anodising an otherwise perfect uncoloured Sportsman item for an Olympic restoration. I'd need to remove the screen before anodising the nut, then replace it - not an easy task without problems by the looks of it. The end where the screen sits looks like it's folded in and I assume the screen was placed originally from the other (female threaded) end. Due to the taper on this part, and assuming I'm correct, then the mesh would need to be folded (but not creased) a bit to move it in or out, then hopefully tapped back into shape to retain. I think this sounds a pretty tricky proposition but all advice appreciated.

I took the rubber(eraser) out of the end of a propelling pencil a skewered it with a piece of piano wire. The tip off the rubber had worn into a dome shape and I used this from inside to gently press out the mesh.
Refitting the mesh was more difficult. In the end I gradually eased it back using my fingers around the edges starting at one place and working my way around. It looked a little out of shape but I reinserted the rubber inside as a support and remolded the screen to shape.

Hmm - interesting, so you did it from the outside rather than the inside. Not what I'd have guessed - if only that doing it that way in production would presumably result in visible scratching of the red anodised finish by the relatively hard edge of the wire screen. Did the finished job look like the screen had been replaced? Thanks for replying.

No the adonised aluminium is quite tough. However, I adonised all the red parts together. Trying to match one part to another is quite difficult. I was restoring all Olympic parts and redoing the adonising. Not far off but doesn't quite match a totally original. Red is a difficult colour to match.
