I keep a zip-seal bag of coins in the car for misc. needs, like tolls or coin-operated tire inflators. The latter was the case today. I usually notice when the edge of US minted quarters/dimes are solid silver.. and save them because they're old. I usually check the year right away. This one was 1960... on one side (my birth-year..) To my surprise.. George is also on the opposite side with a 1964 year.

A few minutes research on the internet proved that this is a novelty-coin.. albeit an old one. It's apparently impossible for U.S. minted coins to be produced this way because of how the die-halves mate together. I read that they're made by; one of two coins being hollowed-out.. and the other is shaved thin to fit inside it.

I like it though.. and will keep it as a memorial to my cousin. He was born in 1964.. and died in 1996. We were the 1st two grandchildren on my mom's family's side.

Hi Eric, I don't know much about minting or novelty coins.. What I know now; I mostly learned yesterday on the web. The quarter-dollar I found, could have been made much later than the dates appearing on it. If you search eBay, they're fairly common.. and don't sell for much more than $10 (U.S.)

At some point in time, the U.S. Treasury started to add a copper core to .10, .25, .50 and $1.00 coins.. because of the cost of silver. I don't think any are made with precious metals anymore. Pennies are now copper-anodized aluminum. A roll of old (solid-copper) pennies is worth a lot more than .50 in copper weight these days. I wouldn't doubt that all U.S. minted coins are probably made of aluminum.. unless they're a special commemorative/collector-series release, where the metal's purity is stated in a certificate.
