Can anyone identify this wood? Hoping it's good stock for beams.

Can anyone identify this wood? Hoping it's good stock for beams.
I picked up a half dozen pieces of this tongue & groove wood from a scrap pile. The lengths were all close but not all the same. It appears to be very hard and heavy. Here are examples. I'll try to make one picture zoomed in on the grain.
This piece is 18.25" x 2.25" x 1/2"(or so) and weighs 1 pound. I'm hoping it will be suitable for high quality engine mounting beams.

Just a stab Rusty, but I'll guess oak floor laminate.

could be light colored maple also a hardwood.
edited 12-12-2015 8:08p.m. PST - my daughter re-did her floor with a thin maple wood flooring and it looked very similar. Is the wood soft, hard, or very hard?

I have cut maple, white ash, red oak, birch, walnut, butternut, beach, elm, and american hornbeam on my bandsaw mill and none of them look like that. Could be something imported if its flooring.

The first two pics look like oak grain to me. The last pic does not.
Just be sure it's not veneer. If you can make a dent in it with your fingernail, stay away.

It's very heavy and rock hard. I'm thinking Oak too. Poor choice for engine bearers. My maple supply left over from the bathroom renovation got black mold in the October flood.

The last pic is the top side with the decorative 1/2" grooves cut into it lengthwise. No, I cannot dent it... barely with a hammer. It's really hard stuff.Cribbs74 wrote:The first two pics look like oak grain to me. The last pic does not.

Rusty: My guess is that it has some kind of hard finish on the top side. Like epoxy, but the key is how hard is the side and the bottom of the wood. Try the fingernail test on the side and bottom of the wood.

While everyone else is guessing, I might as well have a shot. I'm tipping Teak.

I can't tell from the photos ...I doubt it is Teak, most likely old white Oak
Just cut a piece....and make up your typical mount method ( I think you always use aluminum on the engine side) and set the bearer screws/bolts to the torque you are used to--- and see if the blind nut or inserts crush the piece
I suspect it will work as good as the Mapel we prefer

I will agree with Bob oak floor laminate , have you tried to sand the shiny side to see how deep it goes ? If you would want I have pressure treated mahogany wood that I would bee more than happy to cut you some lengths of desired measurements , just let me know . Eric

Your sample looks like a pre finished floor, 1/2" thick hardwood.
Sorry to hear your stash got the black mold from the flood.
I have an abundent supply of wood rejects from a wood chair armrest. These are 10" long 2" wide 3/4" thick. I'm not sure if these are maple or oak. Be more than happy to send you some to play with. PM me your address, if interested.

Re: Can anyone identify this wood? Hoping it's good stock for beams.
From the figure of the wood it is White Oak that has aged and hardened. I am not sure though that it is suitable for engine bearers.
This is a link to a "hardness" chart
http://workshoppages.com/WS/Misc/Wood-Hardness-Chart.pdf
If you compare White Oak to Maple you will see that Maple is harder but that isn't the full story.
Maple has tighter and closer grain making it more suitable for small diameter bolts and screws. You may find these working loose in Oak.
I tried engine bearers from English Oak - when aged it hardens and darkens and blunts saws and chisels but the bolt holes enlarged quickly.
I now use Beech from discarded furniture - same hardness as White Oak but a very tight close and straight grain.

Regardless of the wood discussion, welcome back Ian. It's been quite some time.

When we became worried about you and you contacted me, I posted a note assuring everyone you were indeed fine and well. Glad to see you drop in.
