Cox Engine of The Month
Bottle O’ Engines

Bottle O’ Engines
I was doing some errands downtown this morning, so I figured I’d stop in at the local hobby shop. I looked around for a while and didn’t see anything I need, so I asked the owner to see his used engines box. It was pretty bare the last time I looked, but what the hell. Maybe there’d be something worth 5 bucks.
He brought out this:
I pulled out everything and sorted through them to see what is in there. There were 23 Cox engines and one Atwood engine. I offered him $125 for all of it. The owner countered with $150. I didn’t really need more product engines, but accepted anyway. Ah, well. You gotta just go with it sometimes.

OooWhee, Mark. Way to go.
I guess my sights are set a little low. The first thing
that caught my eye was the blue postage stamp with
the Goldberg mount. Sweet!

Re: Bottle O’ Engines
Shouldn't have told us how many were in there, could've made this a guessing game! I have a jar of Babe Bees that I should post a picture of.
I say you got a score! MkII, Olympic, early Black Widow, stunt tanks, postage stamps, #1 cylinders... great find!

Re: Bottle O’ Engines
Yes indeed! There were a MKII and an Olympic in the jug. I had to work very hard to hide the glee from my face when I saw them in the jug so the owner wouldn't decide not to sell them to me and eBay them himself.
The MKII is in pretty good shape.
But the previous owner of the Olympic should be dragged naked through a field of cactus…
Luckily, the pliers marks are only on the glow head and not on the cylinder.
The only non-Cox engine was this Atwood .049. It seems to be in great shape, picture not withstanding.
For Bees I have a Black Widow, a Silver Bee, and the ever popular Champaign Bee.
There are five postage stamps, three with the Goldberg mount. The white one has a coarse thread needle so I might switch it out for a fine needle. One has a flexible needle that I’ve never seen on a postage stamp. Has Cox ever used a flexible needle? And the blue one is different. Does anyone know which plane used the blue postage stamp backplate? The white one also has the hose clamp type screen over the cylinder. Any clues what plane that would have come off of?
There are two Red horseshoe backplates, both with fine needles.
Three tan horseshoe backplates, also with fine needles.
Four tan backplates with the exhaust shields and fine needles.
And lastly, just some plain old product engines with boring old coarse needles. Luckily, a couple of them seem to have brand new glow heads. In fact, of all the .049s, 13 seem to have new glow heads. Maybe the previous owner refreshed them, thinking he'd be flying them soon, but ended up storing them instead.
I’m assuming that the previous owner replaced all the needles in the tan horseshoe backplates with fine needles. Unless someone knows of planes that came with fine needles in horseshoe backplates? I’m not really versed in the various product engines. Does anyone know the likely planes the tan horseshoes with the exhaust shields came from?
So, final tally: One Olympic .15, one TD.15 MKII, three tanked bees of different pursuasions, five postage stamps of various flavors, 13 horseshoe backplates, 9 with fine needles, and one Atwood .049. Not bad for $150. But, maybe I should have offered him $100 and let him talk me up to $125.

Re: Bottle O’ Engines
Even for $150, to me this seems like a jackpot. Not that I would need that many engines to use, but several of them are something I would like to add to my little collection
I would have paid 150 bucks (maybe even Euros) for that lot in a heartbeat.

Re: Bottle O’ Engines
Wow Mark, that's a whopper of a catch. I usually don't get too excited over a buncha old Cox engines, but this one is special in so many ways. Whoever owned then must've known how to use them, I'd forgive the pliered glow head. I hope you have fun thinking up cool machines to build around them.
And Mud, great to see you drop in, thanks for posting . I think about you every time I open my Cox Drawer to check and oil them or show someone my favorites. The RR1 hasn't been warmed up lately, I think I should bolt it up to pass one of these endless rainy days.
And that's all I got to say about that.
Later Mark,
Later Mud,
Rusty

The MKII will more than pay for your find, (If’n you decide to sell it.)
The blue 290 is a definite keeper. It was never used on a production model and is quite rare.
The flexible needle valve was only used on the second version of the Gurney Eagle. Here, it’s attached to a 290, but should be on the 190-5 engine.
The two red horseshoe backplate engines are the 191-0 used on the WWI fighters. You may notice that they do not have the four holes for aftermarket mounting. (Compare them to the white horseshoe engines.)
Nicely done
Holy Cow! You're right. I didn't notice that the red backplates don't have the mounting holes. That's cool. And I'll cleanup and just admire the blue postage stamp backplate for now. Of course, I DO have that blue TD-4....
Naw, I'm not selling the MKII. I'm thinking of building a Jr. Satan for it. To be flown only over grass, of course.
Thanks for the lesson, Mudhen.
