Hmmm... How come?

Hmmm... How come?
How come I never thought about using a tank mount with a Medallion and this throttle setup?

Note: I put this in Cox Engines instead of Off-Site Auctions because I'm referring to the concept, not the actual auction itself.

Re: Hmmm... How come?
Three questions.. Do those tanks have a clunk pick-up? Do they come apart for servicing? Were they made by Kavan?
edit: answered question #3..

Re: Hmmm... How come?
Those tank mounts are desirable by certain collectors. I really don't know why. They were suited for free flight and r/c. They don't work well for control line use due to the pickup being in the bottom middle and the fact they put the engine way out. I've also seen them allow the engine to vibrate a good bit . There's no clunk and they eventually leak not to mention get real brittle.

Got one of those tank mounts NIB (jewel-case), guess I'll keep it that way since apparently it isn't all that useful. Thanks for the heads up.

Must be the heavy rain up your way.
What is the advantage of this setup over the muffler-throttle setup used on the Cox Dragonfly? Other than it is hard to find.

Re: Hmmm... How come?
I would assume they would be for control line only with the vent tube set up. I wouldn't mind cutting up a trashed one to see how they work.

Happydad,
These actually throttle better than the rotating ring type. I've used both, and the slide restrictor coupled with the rotating spray bar makes for a lower idle and more linear response to the throttle.
I must be lucky. I've never had a leak problem with these tank mounts. Granted, I've not flown a huge number of hours with them. I've mostly used them for RC. I've only used one a couple of times in CL when I put one in my Medallion powered Coroplast PT-19.

Re: Hmmm... How come?
What Cox overlooked is that the mounting bolt pattern of the tank is not the same as a Bee backplate. The height is the same but the holes are wider apart. This means you cannot do a straight swap from TD to Bee series engines or the other way around. The tank of the Dragonfly has the same mounting bolt pattern as the Bee backplate.

Re: Hmmm... How come?
The red plastic tanks used to be used a lot. I used them for my first 1/2A Profile Proto and Speed models. They'll run quite some time and easily I was getting 15 laps on 42 foot lines. I never knew where the pickup was but I wouldn't doubt that it's on the bottom center. My first couple of Tee Dees had these, one was a CG Lil Wizard with an 051 on the red tank and a Jumping Bean with an 051 on the same type red tank. They looked cool and I have a couple of replicas sitting around that be finished.
