Happy Cox pull start engines

I'm working on a pull start out of a Dune Buggy and I cleaned the engine thoroughly. Now when I pull the cord it seems to slip and not engage fully. I squirted a bit of fuel into the mechanism and exhaust port and after a couple of pulls it finally engaged. The engine sat for a day and now it's slipping again. Does the engines need a drop or 2 of running, need repair or is the normal?

I think the ratchet does not engage when pulled because of the gummed castor that was pnly temporarily softened by the fuel.

I guess it needs a thorough cleaning. Like dipping into denatured alcohol.

Happy Use contact cleaner

Joe: i squirt the pull start mechanism with contact cleaner, shake it while it has the liquid in it, then spray again to remove the gummy yuck. If that doesn't work, disassemble the stupid thing carefully, not loosing any of the little springs or cams. Soak in fuel or use the contact cleaner, using gloves, and wipe each piece clean. Reassemble with a light coat of light oil or after run engine oil. Worked for me twice.

The engine has been cleaned thoroughly and I didn't touch the cam or anything else so I'll try some oil. Did yours slip when clean also?

It is completely cleaned inside and out. All parts are there it just slips when the fuel evaporates that I use for prime and to lube the pull start.

it need to bee! lol! heated on the stove in a pot of olive oil and then put in rubbing alcohol for 2-3 days then put it back together I hope it works

Just thought I'd throw one your way Joe.
I have one of the same engines(here somewhere).
It has the tapered crank nose if I remember correctly.
Any chance the pull starter is slipping on the crankshaft?

I was leaving for the Gym and didn't read the post completely. What type of pull start do you have? The type with the cams or the springs and "clips?, can't think of their name. I tend to lean to Bob's idea that the tapered nose on the crankshaft is not tight to the pull start mechanism. I saw this in one of the "finger starter" type car engines I have and don't have a solution. If the finger starter mechanism is tight the engine will not turn over, if the mechanism is too loose then it slips.

I have had these pull starts completely apart. Kinda like working on a live mousetrap. There must be gunk in the dog mechanism. Not sure if you have the kind with the two small disks or the cam version. Either way it will need to come apart. This was a constant problem with the GTP Nisan as well.
