I'm hoping this is the right area to post this question. Can rustolem clear be used to fuel proof our control line glow fuel powered planes?
I need something I can use to fuel proof my planes that doesn't cost alot,I build and fly for fun and usually fly them until I push them to the limit, into the ground. But need something to fuel proof them with.Haven't built and flown years.
Thanks Jim

I remember back around the new millennium guys using rustolem and monokote instead of dope without any problems, i surfed it and you'll see the answers vary. Drying time and nitro content play a large part.

I did surf the web, got a variety of answers, was hoping to get a direct answer from someone here with actual experience.
Thanks mark.

The variety of answers are due to the variety of experiences. I didn't bother to even take a chance as my luck usually is bad with stuff like that.

The only sure way to get a fuel proof finish is with automotive clear spray. Lot's of info on what brands to use in here.

Rustoleum clear is NOT fuel resistant. Lustrekote from the makers of Monokote is. You have to spray it very lightly over Rustoleum colors to keep it from crazing. If you build it up to a good solid coat with several light applications, it works great and lasts a long time. It may crack a bit over the years, but it protects against fuel very well. Let the Rustoleum set up for over a week or ten days before applying Lustrekote. I hear Krylon colors are faster curing, but haven't tried it. I will on my current Twister project.

I've found DupliColor acrylic enamel available at NAPA to be fuel proof up to 10% nitro.

Rustoleum colors are pretty fuel tolerant already. They do discolor with fuel pooling though.

Polyurethane varnish is quite fuel tolerant. It is also available in rattle cans and clear.
